Woodgreen Pets Charity

Woodgreen Pets Charity Keeping pets and their people together – this is how we rescue. Woodgreen is dedicated to helping pets and their people every step of the way.

We exist to ensure that every pet can have a healthy and happy home, and for every owner to get the practical, hands-on support they need to make this possible. We want all pets to live happy, fulfilling lives, and we do everything we can to make that a reality. Any pet that comes to our Centre is given specialist care which meets their individual needs. And when they’re ready, we find them the pe

rfect match – their second chance at happiness. As well as finding loving homes for vulnerable pets, we also provide a number of vital services to support humans, so that they can be the best pet owners they can be. This includes expert advice on the phone and online, as well as workshops, classes and community support. As seen on Channel 4’s ‘The Dog House’, Woodgreen’s Centre is based in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, where we care for dogs, cats, and small animals. Everything we do is funded through our generous supporters – we receive no government funding.

Koala came into Woodgreen as a stray, so we don’t know if she’d ever had a home of her own before.

But good news – she’s finally found a family to cling onto. 🐨✨

She’s now busy settling in, being thoroughly spoilt rotten, and enjoying all the comforts of home life.

Wish her luck! 💚

Thinking about letting your cat outside for the first time? 🐈💚

For many cats, outdoor access can be great for their wellbeing. Exploring outside gives them the chance to climb, sniff, scratch, chase, play and express natural behaviours that help keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

But those first outdoor adventures can feel quite daunting for you and your pet.

A few simple things can help make it safer and less stressful:

🐾 Wait until they’ve had time to properly settle in at home
🐾 Choose a calm, quiet day for their first explore
🐾 Let them go at their own pace – no forcing!
🐾 Feed them around the same time each day so they learn when to come home
🐾 Make sure their microchip details are up to date

When Marmalade stopped eating properly and started behaving out of character, Susan knew something wasn't right.

After several visits to the vet, Susan was feeling confused and concerned about Marmalade's health. When she was quoted £1,000 for a kidney scan, the situation felt even more daunting. Having recently moved following a no-fault eviction and faced with higher housing costs, she simply couldn't afford it.

That's when our Outreach Officer Steph stepped in.

Steph attended vet appointments alongside Susan, helping her feel more confident discussing Marmalade's care and exploring options that felt manageable. From supporting a pain-relief trial that identified the cause of his discomfort, to arranging his dental surgery at Woodgreen and helping with transport and medication, she was there every step of the way. Together, they were able to get Marmalade the treatment he needed while keeping him right where he belonged - at home with Susan.

Today, Marmalade is feeling much more like himself.

By providing practical support when it was needed, we were able to help keep Marmalade with the person who loves him, in the home he knows.

This is how we rescue.

☀️ If the pavement's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

Before heading out, try the tarmac test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it's uncomfortable for you, it's uncomfortable for your dog too.

When temperatures rise, save walks for the cooler parts of the day. Early mornings and later evenings are usually the safest and most comfortable times for dogs to be out and about.

And don't forget plenty of fresh water and shady spots to rest.

Today, we laid out 1,330 pet toys.

Each one symbolised 20 pets who may have stayed with the people who love them if the right support had been available sooner - representing an estimated 26,561 dogs and cats.

Behind every toy is a difficult decision. Rising costs. Housing pressures. Life changes.

Most people never wanted to say goodbye to their pet. Often, they simply needed support sooner.

At Woodgreen, we believe rescue means more than finding pets new homes. It’s also about stepping in earlier -supporting pets and their people before they reach crisis point, and helping keep them together wherever possible.

This is how we rescue.

With the weather due to heat up this weekend, here’s a reminder to help keep your dog safe and comfortable on hotter days. ☀️🐶

🐾 Never leave your dog in the car
🐾 Walk earlier in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler
🐾 Check pavements before walkies - paws can easily burn. If it's hot to touch - don't walk
🐾 Keep fresh drinking water topped up
🐾 Look out for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting or vomiting

Little pup Esme was around six weeks old when she found herself at Woodgreen.

She was very small for her age, so our team put together a diet plan to help her gain weight safely. During her health check, our vets also noticed her front legs bent and wobbled a little as she walked. While it looked worrying at first, they felt confident that with time, gentle support and physiotherapy, her legs would strengthen as she grew.

Esme soon moved into foster care with Amber, where she could continue recovering in a home environment. With daily gentle exercises and plenty of rest in between, Esme began to build strength - all at her own pace.

Living with Amber’s dogs also helped Esme learn how to play, build confidence and understand the finer points of doggy manners. As she grew stronger, her personality really started to show - full of energy, curiosity and determination, with absolutely no intention of being left out of anything.

Within just a month, Esme’s legs had improved significantly and it was time to start the search for her new home.

Now renamed Stella, she’s settled in beautifully, enjoying her walks and continuing to learn and grow with her new family.
