It’s been a day full of labradors today. One of my favourite breeds ♥️
This is Beau and he came to me today because his lovely owners are struggling with his unpredictable aggression 😔.
Beau has bitten both his owners and snapped at other people.
He has seen other trainers, but unfortunately his behaviour has become worse over time.
Sometimes he won’t get out the car after a trip out and growls when his owners approach him 🤦♀️. Today was about assessing the ‘why’ he is behaving like he does and also the ‘how’ we are going to make it right ✅.
So you would probably jump on board and say ‘resource guarding’ and to a degree it is…..BUT Beau has inadvertently been rewarded (with treats, often as a bribe) for his unwanted behaviour and this has now reinforced his behaviour so he has escalated it to his advantage ⛔️
So firstly we need to stop bribing and treating this boy, (unless he actually does something he deserves a reward for). And even then, it doesn’t need to be food!!
My next session is a ‘home visit’ where I can see what his environment allows him to ‘guard’ and ‘control’ and we will be making some changes.
Keep posted for more updates on this lovely boy 🙌🤩
