Dry ground has arrived early this spring, and we’re already seeing the impact out hacking and on the tracks.

When the going gets firm, it’s time to think smarter about your horse’s fitness work.

At Moor Place Gallops, our all weather surface offers a consistent, forgiving ride underfoot, ideal for maintaining condition without the risk that comes with hard ground. Whether you’re building fitness, bringing horses back into work, or simply looking for a safer surface, the gallops are riding beautifully.

This reel says it all… hard grind underfoot versus the quality surface we can offer.

Keep your horses feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to perform.

Rain certainly didn’t dampen spirits at Moor Place Gallops today, as two friends met up as usual to keep their much loved older horses enjoying their work.

Kirsti was out with her wonderful 21 year old grey, Bran, while Lisa brought along Cesar, also a very youthful 21 and still full of enthusiasm. Both riders spoke about how important variety is for keeping older horses happy, motivated, and moving well, and how valuable facilities like Moor Place are for supporting that work throughout the year, whatever the weather.

A great reminder that with good management, thoughtful training, and good company, horses can keep thriving well into their later years.

Moor Place Gallops | Getting Event Horses Ready for March

If you are bringing an event horse back into work or sharpening fitness for the start of the season, Moor Place Gallops is the ideal place to do it. With a 6.5 furlong all weather surface, it offers consistent, safe footing whatever the winter throws at us and allows you to build fitness with confidence.

The length of the gallop makes it perfect for progressive conditioning work. You can start quietly and build week by week without rushing, helping horses arrive at their first run in March feeling strong, balanced and ready to perform. It is a brilliant option for young horses stepping up a level as well as experienced campaigners who need structured fitness without unnecessary wear and tear.

Ideas for getting your event horse ready for March

• Early base fitness
Use steady canters up the full 6.5 furlongs to establish aerobic fitness before introducing faster work. Consistency now pays dividends later.

• Progressive sets
Break the gallop into sections. For example two steady canters followed by a slightly more forward effort, gradually increasing intensity over several weeks.

• Rhythm and balance
Gallops are not just about speed. Focus on rhythm, straightness and relaxation, especially for younger or greener horses.

• Confidence building
The reliable surface is ideal for horses that lack confidence on variable ground during the winter months.

• Mental freshness
A change of scenery from the school or fields keeps horses mentally engaged and enthusiastic as the season approaches.

Moor Place Gallops is a straightforward, professional setup that supports good horsemanship and thoughtful preparation. A great way to start the season feeling organised rather than rushed.
