Renee (Deepfleet Jagger x FTCH Shellspoon Time to Shine) born 29.5.24 won the MidSussex Working Spaniel Club novice stake yesterday at Holryde Estate,Ripley, Surrey. I had trialled her twice before coming second both times, first in August on the rabbits with the Yorkshire Gundog Club and last week in Andover with the Kintbury interestingly coming second to her litter sister handled by Rod Thompson. The winning trophy is the ‘Presidents Cup’, all though a bit battered it has considerable history. It was originally presented to the winner of the Open Qualifying Stake and was first presented in 1974 to Harold
Norrington with Ford Creek Carlo. Harold lived in the same part of Essex as me and before he died I spoke to him at his home. I remember him saying that his conclusion at the end of his trialling career was that it is better to have a soft dog that takes longer but lasts longer than a hard dog you are constantly ‘fighting’ with. I won this stake in 2004 with Rytex Ragamuffin of Deepfleet, in 2011 with his daughter Rosebay Fuschia of Deepfleet, in 2013 with another daughter Tregerest Teal of Deepfleet (came second that day as well with his son Zac). I also won this stake in 2022 with his great granddaughter Shiveck Beretta of Deepfleet but that was when the new trophy was being presented. In my opinion it is so important to get the trophies engraved and looked after because they are a great historical record of the breed and the Society. Out of interest Renee is a great great great granddaughter of Ragamuffin.
