☀️ WARM WEATHER ☀️

Although it’s nearing the end of August, the weather is still proving to be very warm. Remember it’s EXTRA hot for our furry friends. Just imagine how hot it would be for us in a fur coat?! So before stepping out in to the heat of the pathways or garden remember these tips;

- walk either first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
Remember; if it’s too hot on the concrete when resting your hand for 5 seconds, it’s far too hot for paws and could cause serious burns to their paw pads 🐾

- Ensure your pets are having regular grooms including de-sheds for those particularly hairy pups 🪮

- Offer fresh cool bowls of water, both indoor and outdoor but kept in the shade 💧

- Create shaded areas, particularly when out and about ⛱️

- Offer fans, cooling mats and cooling bandanas. Keep areas as ventilated as possible but remember to buckle your pets in when travelling. Air conditioning a car a few minutes before they get in will make all the difference 🪭

- Offer cool treats. Homemade and shop bought are both great options just make sure these are suitable for pet consumption. Things like doggy ice creams or bone broth are ideal 🍦

🌅 ANOTHER WARM WEEKEND AHEAD ☀️

Heatstroke is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, so although it’s wonderful for us humans to enjoy a bbq in the sun- it’s far from ideal for our pets.

Pets are especially vulnerable in hot weather. Common triggers include being left in hot cars, exercising during the heat of the day, or even being in a warm room without proper ventilation.

Brachycephalic breeds, elderly pets, and those with underlying health issues are particularly at risk.

Signs of heatstroke may include:

* Excessive panting
* Drooling
* Vomiting or diarrhoea
* Lethargy or confusion
* Collapse or seizures

🔔Prevent heatstroke by:

* Walking dogs early in the morning,late evening, or not at all
* Ensuring pets always have access to shade and fresh water
* Never leaving animals in vehicles, even briefly
* Place back of hand on the ground, if too hot for you for 5 seconds, too hot for your pet.

🚨If you pet is showing signs of heat stroke:

* Ask a family member/friend to call your vet to inform them you will be attending with a heat stroke patient, and provide a predicted arrival time
* Move your pet to a cool, shaded area immediately.
* Under constant supervision: pour over or hose your pet with very cold water and if possible, immerse them (e.g., a paddling pool or bath) ensuring their head is always held above water.
* When using a hose ensure this is running cold first, as residual very hot water can be held in the hoseline.
* Use a fan or air movement to help cooling.
* Ensure that the car is air-condition cooled before travelling.

‼️IMPORTANT‼️

Always seek urgent veterinary care even if your pet seems to recover. Heatstroke can cause delayed complications.

‼️ PLEASE READ ‼️

This week we are due to have a scorching couple of days.
Please take extra precautionary measures with your pets today, in particular, brachycephalic breeds. If you have a routine appointment with us you may be called to ask to change your appointment to a different day. This is a measure taken to ensure your pet is as safe as possible.

•If you feel it’s too warm out there, do not venture with your pets. Dogs will be fine missing a few days of walks.

•If you do need to travel, dogs should travel in a pre-air conditioned car, and to arrive as close to their appt time as possible so they are not waiting.

•If your dogs are showing any signs of heat exertion (lethargy, panting) in the hour before their appointment, please call us before travel so we can advise if they should attend.

🔔Our shop is extremely warm when the sun is shining on days like today, so please DO NOT bring your pets in wherever possible.

🚨Remember to offer fresh water and cooling treats, avoid the heat of the day by staying indoors, and have fans and windows open.

Stay safe ☀️
