Parasite recognition

Fleas.

- fleas are small wingless insects ( around 3mm) long.
- you can identify fleas from skin irritation, red bumps, flea dirt and excessive itching
- They cause anaemia in dogs which makes them weak and tired
- They can lay up to 350 eggs a week
- Life cycle: egg ( 1-6 days), larve ( 5-20 days), pupa ( 3days- 20 weeks) and adult

Prevention

ALWAYS SEEK VETERAN ADVICE
- vacuum and disinfect every and anywhere your dog may and would have been.
- If siblings make sure to treat them too.
- wash all bedding and fabrics on 60 degrees

Ticks.

- ticks are arachnids that attach onto dogs skin and feed on their blood.
- Usually oval shape and between 3mm and 11mm in size
- They can be white, brown and grey.
- They tend to stay for several days and once they are full they detach themselves.
- They tend to hide in dogs pads, inside ears and even in the mouth.
- Life cycle: Egg, larva, nymph and adult.
- ZOONOTIC DISEASE ( a disease than can be passed from animal to human)
- Black legged ticks can cause Lyme disease which tends to be common in the warmer months
