❤️‍🩹 Today is National Grief Awareness day ❤️‍🩹

We spend years caring for your dogs and getting to know their unique personalities, from their first grooms to their senior visits. Having that connection with them and their owners means we also feel the pain of their loss when they pass away.

The loss of a dog leaves a significant absence in daily routines and in a home. Pet loss is genuine grief, and it deserves time and space to be recognised.

If you are navigating the loss of a dog, please know we are thinking of you. Their presence meant a lot to us, too. 🐾🐕🌈

If you need to talk to someone about your pet loss grief Blue Cross Pet Loss Support Service is only a phone call away, 0800 096 6606 (available 8:30 am to 8:30 pm every day).

We had a great Sunday morning socialising our 2 dogs Moomin and Willow at the K9 Hydrofit Evesham dog show.

So many lovely dogs I don't envy the judge Oli from Venn's Raw Choice.

Thank you for a lovely morning out. Both dogs are now worn out and sleeping peacefully. 😴

🐶 Great Grooming Starts at Home: Setting Your Dog Up for Success!

As dog owners, we all want our pups to look and feel their absolute best. But did you know that a stress-free experience on the grooming table actually begins right in your living room? Whether you’ve just brought home a wiggly new puppy or welcomed a rescue dog into your family, helping your dog feel safe and confident during grooming is a team effort between you and your groomer.

Here is how you can build rock-solid grooming confidence at home from day one:

🫶 Paws-on Touch:
Regularly handle your dog’s paws, ears, tail, and muzzle while offering high-value treats. Teaching them that human touch all over their body leads to good things prevents surprise or fear during a groom.

📦 Mastering Restraint & Raised Surfaces:
Practice having your dog sit or stand on a non-slip, slightly raised surface (like a sturdy bath mat on a coffee table or low bench) while gently holding them. This simulates the grooming table environment and teaches them to stay calm while restrained.

🪥 Sound Desensitisation:
Sounds like dryers and clippers can be scary. Start introducing these sounds early! A great trick is turning on a battery-operated toothbrush and gently holding the handle end against your dog’s body to get them used to both the buzz and the vibration.

🛁 Making Splash Time Fun:
Build positive associations with water before bath day even happens. Let them explore a dry bathtub with treats scattered inside, then gradually introduce warm water slowly without rushing.

🛝 Everyday Confidence:
Broaden their horizons through gentle habituation and socialisation. Exposure to different textures, environments, people and handling techniques builds an adaptable, resilient dog.

✂️ Maintenance & Regular Visits:
Regular brushing at home prevents uncomfortable knots and matting, keeping coats pain-free. Teaming up with us for consistent salon visits keeps their coat manageable and keeps the routine familiar.

What if my dog is already anxious or reactive?
Don't worry, you haven't missed the boat! For dogs who find the process overwhelming, we recommend booking a course of dedicated behavioural grooming training sessions. These short, positive, slow-paced sessions focus entirely on desensitisation and trust-building rather than forcing a full groom.

Together, we can make grooming a happy, relaxing part of your dog’s routine! Drop us a message to chat about starting your pup's journey with Tidy Tails. ✨

Photo of lovely 8mth puppy Kobe who has been coming regularly for his grooms since he was 4 months. He was a very wriggly excitable pup and a little unsure of scissors and clippers near his face. Every session his grooms look far better as he becomes calmer and more confident with the whole process.

Happy International Dog Day 🐕❤️🐾

Here are the 2 dogs that make my life whole.

Moomin a 6 year old Bullterrier rescued from an abusive owner by the police. She comes with a lot of noise phobias and anxiety but she's such a big character and always makes us laugh at her antics.

Willow a 5 year old Sheepadoodle which we recently rehomed. She is loving life and all the love and attention she gets. Her coat is currently growing back after needing a complete shave down and itchy sore bare skin from being infested with fleas. Keep your eye out for some experimental haircuts in future.

Today I had Bear, a 65kg Caucasian Shepherd Dog who is truly a gentle giant booked in for a full groom and deshedding. He’s had a rough start in life and is now in his third home with wonderful owners who are doing everything right, working with trainers to help him manage his anxiety and leash reactivity.

We knew today would be a test, so his owners waited in the car while I tried to start the groom. At first, Bear was a superstar. Ten minutes in, he willingly stepped right into the hydrobath. But the moment I slid the side door shut to secure him, pure panic set in. Feeling trapped, his immediate reaction was to try and frantically chew his way out through the bath wall.
When a dog reaches that level of panic, his safety and mental wellbeing are the only things that matter. Muzzling wasn't an option since he's still in the middle of muzzle training, tethering a 65kg dog short enough to prevent biting wasn't practical, and pushing him through it would have set his anxiety training back drastically.

Before I could change tact, Bear decided to take matters into his own paws. With very little effort, all 65kg of him leaped right over the side of the bath pushing past me and headed for the door! (At 50kg myself, I certainly wasn't stopping that BFG when he made up his mind!)

While it’s frustrating not to finish, I refuse to compromise a dog's mental health for a haircut. Admitting "defeat" today was actually the best choice for Bear. He isn't ready for a full groom just yet, but he will be. We’re going to step back and work on a structured, cooperative care program, taking tiny baby steps to get him comfortable with the grooming room, the bath, and feeling enclosed.

Huge respect to his owners for being so supportive. Bear is a special boy, and we’re in this for the long haul! 🐾❤️
