Please be aware that even when the sun goes down it is still in the high 20s in the evenings
So if you do have to take your dog out do so with caution.

Short calm sniffy walk, not high impact exercise.
Shaded if possible,
Wet them before you go with cold water and when you return. Being wet helps evaporate heat away from them.
Test the pavement with your hand or bare foot 20 seconds . If its too hot for you, its too hot for them
Carry plenty of cool water and keep hydrated... you and your dog.
If you have to go in the car then make sure that the car is cooled down before the dog gets in and keep journeys to a minimum.

Heat stress or heatstroke is caused by high temperatures not just direct sunlight.

Be sensible and keep.your dog safe.

Would you believe that our Kaleb ( black one) is 17 with these antics? He just cant help himself 🙈🤣

He regularly get his his dad up very early in the morning to do zoomies.

Not bad for an old boy with Arthritis

Massage, hydro, laser, librela and yumove are definitely keeping Kaleb moving. 😍 living his best life.

Through the summer months we will be opening as early as 6.30 for appointments to avoid having to change everyone's appointments when it is hot.

This way we can make sure the dogs are exercised within safe temperatures be kept comfortable cool and happy.

Heat related incidents are life threatening for the dog and distressing for all involved.

We did this last summer and it seemed to work well.

Dogs that have certain conditions, excess weight, breed and coat types and age will be priority for earlier appointments.

Thank you for you co operation.

Heres some tips to help keep them cool in the hot weather.

Remember brain work and sniffing is much better for the dogs as it calms them down better than high impact exercise.

Just to add.
Please ensure your car is cool before putting your dog in, carry plenty of water,
Cold wet towel to lie on, wet down before and after traveling.

It’s HOT HOT HOT! Please avoid heat stroke by allowing your dogs a lazy day at home in a cool building. Take them a short walk early morning or late at night.

If your dog develops heat exhaustion; panting, hot to touch, distressed…

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

LONG RANT ALERT

I dont normally use social media to rant but every single year this frustrates the hell out of me and I feel so sorry for the dogs.

Why am I still seeing a "professional" dog walker taking dogs out in this heat to a field with no shelter or shaded areas and no running water ??
At 1pm in blazing sun!

I am not going to name them but if your dog walker is going still walk your dogs in the heat which currently in direct sunlight is 29° then I suggest you find another dog walker before your dog pays the price!!

Usual scenario.
They will run around for an hour, get in a hot van even air-conditioned vans are not that effective, then go get dropped off at home.
May be wet slightly and then left.
Harsh reality is
Most likely left unsupervised, over heating and could potentially die before anyone is home

If you walk dogs in this heat then I strongly suggest you either research heat related incidents in dogs.or update your first aid.course with one that explains how dangerous heat related incidents with animals, dog in particular.

Dogs dont sweat like we do.
Their core temperatures continually rise after exercise.
Double coats stop the heat getting in but also prevents heat from leaving the body so it becomes a furnace burning inside the body.
Leaving them with a bowl of water or just letting drink loads wont stop it and will potentially cause water intoxication which is a whole different subject.
Rapid cooling with plenty of cold water is the best way to cool an over heated dog, then straight to the vets.
RCVS have updated their information on heatstroke
https://www.rvc.ac.uk/small-animal-vet/teaching-and-research/fact-files/heatstroke-in-dogs-and-cats

Dr David Marlin also has endless information and research on heatstroke in dogs.

Dogs do not die from a missed walk.
Brain games in the garden, very early and very late calm sniffing walks are much better and tiring for them.

I WONDER HOW MANY DOGS WILL SUFFER
HEATSTOKE AND /OR DIE THIS SUMMER.

Please be your dog's advocate and dont let it be them.

To Everyone
Important message please read.
Its looking to be very hot from friday 22nd and in to next weekso we will need to move appointments around to early as possible.
Although we are working in water it is working and the dogs will still get hot.
So swimming/ exercise in the heat, the having to get in a hot car can still cause over heating. Especially older and overweight dogs. Fitness swims may need to be postponed to accommodate the rehabilitation, and medical swims.
The dogs welfare as always is paramount to us.
Please carry plenty of water in the car traveling to us. Hose them down with cool water before and after traveling.
Cool mats or damp cold towels for them to lay on, we can re wet them before you leave.
We will also cool shower the dogs and leave damp to help keep them cool on the way home.

We will be starting from 6.30am on the hot days through the summer.

Please bear with us while we adjust the appointments and help us by letting us know when you can move to.

Many thanks
Kerry and the team.
