Why would I need to learn about pain though? 🤔
When your dog is in for their haircut your groomer is also looking out for changes in their coat, their skin, their behaviour, and in how they feel about being handled. All of these things could be early signs that your dog has an underlying health condition. And it’s another reason to keep your dog on a regular appointment schedule 🐩✂️

🥵 HEATSTROKE WARNING ⚠️

If your dog is showing ANY signs of heatstroke:
excessive panting, drooling, bright red/ pale gums, increased heart rate, lethargy, difficulty breathing, agitation, vomiting, diarrhoea, disorientation, weakness, seizures or collapse

Immediately get them WET and call your vet (our number is 0131 516 2499 ) and travel there ASAP.

By getting them WET we mean you submerge them (protecting their head) in COLD water or have running cold water (hose or repeated buckets) over them.

You will not cause shock by using water that is too cold - tepid water is NOT recommended, and neither are soaked towels (which quickly heat up and do not help). You can offer your dog some water to drink but do not try to force anything into their mouth (especially not lemon juice!)

Most importantly, stay safe - miss out your walk on hot days, or go in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. No dog dies from missing one walk, but sadly, every year, some do from exercise-induced heatstroke. Don't be tempted to leave your dog in the car even for a few minutes.

As the gorgeous Scottish sun is out, we have to think about protecting our pets ❤️ ☀️

If it is sunny enough to need suncream yourself, your pet will need some too, especially on thin/patchy areas of fur.

To keep them safe:
- avoid walking dogs in the middle of hot days
- don't allow pets to sunbathe in direct sunlight
- ensure they always have access to plenty of shade
- apply sunscreen to any thinly haired/naked areas ie nose, ear tips, tummy
- use only safe sunblock: make sure it is pet/child safe, SPF30+ and waterproof
- apply at least 2 layers 15min+ before they go out

DANGER OF SUNBURN
Sunburn is extremely painful and can lead to infection. First aid includes using cold compresses, but we recommend coming to see us so that we can dispense pain relief, and potentially a fluid drip and antibiotics.

There is a type of cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) which is caused by exposure to UV-rays. Signs include dark patches, non-healing wounds/scabs on exposed sections of skin (eg ear tips, nose, eyelids). It is a relatively uncommon condition, but needs rapid diagnosis and treatment to be successful.

Reminder 🚨

Please do not bring your dog to their appointment if they have (or you think they might have) fleas.

I’ve just lost the weekend due to fleas 🐜 This is not only frustrating for me due to loss of income and diary issues, but it’s also upsetting for customers who’ve had their appointments rescheduled at short notice.

There are strict procedures to be followed if a dog has been in with fleas or a communicable illness such as a tummy bug, with a wider impact than just your own appointment so please if you’re unlucky enough to find yourself in this situation, just pop me a message to reschedule.
