🐾Today the Dog Theft (Scotland) Bill passed Stage 1 in Parliament 🐾

For too long, stolen dogs have been treated as “property”, the same as a stolen phone or bike. This Bill recognises them for what they are: sentient beings, much loved family members, and companions.

If passed, the Bill will:

🐾 Make dog theft a specific criminal offence
🐾 Penalties up to 5 years in prison/unlimited fines
🐾 Allow victims to give impact statements in court
🐾 Introduce tougher penalties for the theft of assistance dogs
🐾 Require the Scottish Government to collect and publish data

This is a major milestone towards protecting dogs, supporting owners, and cracking down on organised crime. We encourage you to show your support for Scotland’s dogs by writing to your MSP and urge them to back the Dog Theft Bill as it progresses through Parliament.

If you’re considering getting a dog with exceptional grooming needs, understand this clearly: the responsibility is yours. Too many people jump into owning high-maintenance breeds without any knowledge, then complain when reality doesn’t match their fantasy. Unlike them, you at least say you understand the breed—but if you then let the coat become neglected, leave it too late to book, cancel appointments last minute, or expect miracles when your dog is matted beyond saving, you’re no better.

I don’t exist to pick up the pieces of poor planning or unrealistic expectations. If your dog ends up needing shaved, that’s not neglect on my part—that’s the direct result of your failure to maintain the coat and schedule properly. Do not waste my time with last-minute cancellations, holding appointments you won’t use, or running elsewhere because the impossible hasn’t been achieved.

Reality check: if you don’t understand the breed’s grooming needs, or can’t commit to regular, responsible upkeep, then this breed is not for you. Learn, plan, and take responsibility—or don’t get the dog.
