Remember to hide Easter eggs from your pets this weekend 🐣🍫

Rosie was in the car already on her way to us for her vaccine appointment when she ate a chocolate egg from her owners' shopping bags - at least she was heading to the right place! We gave her an injection to make her sick and she thankfully brought up the chocolate. We also gave her some charcoal to help prevent absorption of the toxic substance in chocolate, theobromine, in the stomach and intestines. She was wagging her tail again by the time she went home!

Happy Easter from us all at Thistle Vets 🐇🐣💜

🐰Thinking of getting a bunny this Easter?🐰

🐇It's so important to do research and preparation before getting any pets to ensure that they will fit into your lifestyle
🐇Rabbits can live for as long as 8-12 years and require a lot of space and mental stimulation as well as being a huge commitment in terms of money and time
🐇They have very specific dietary needs and are at risk of gut stasis and dental issues if not fed an appropriate diet
🐇Rabbits are social animals so it is strongly advised that they are kept with at least one other friendly rabbit that they have been bonded to - the bonding process takes research and time too
🐇Rabbits require a lot of space - the Rabbit Welfare Assocation & Fund advise a single enclosed area of at least 3m x 2m by 1m high. Upper floors/raised platforms do not count towards this space, as rabbits need room to display positive behaviours, i.e. to run rather than just hop

Here are photos of our VCA Lauren's rabbits' set up, this is a great example of rabbit accommodation with plenty of space and mental enrichment! 🐰🌸

🐣How to keep your pet safe this Easter 🐣

🐰Keep Easter eggs and other chocolate out of reach, being particularly mindful if you are setting up an Easter egg hunt and hiding eggs around your garden or house. Chocolate is toxic to your pet and even small amounts can be dangerous if ingested
🐰Hot cross buns contain dried fruit which are also toxic to your pet, so be sure to keep these out of reach too
🐰Did you know that many spring bulbs and plants are toxic to your pet too? This includes daffodils, amaryllis, hyacinths, tulips, rhododendrons, bluebells and more. Keep this in mind when planting your spring flowers or if you receive/give any plants as gifts!
🐰Rabbits are often associated with this time of year and some might think a pet bunny is a cute gift idea for kids. However, rabbits are high maintenance pets with particular needs, and you should never get a pet without doing extensive research first.
🐰Easter decorations can also pose a risk to your pet if they ingest or get caught up in them, so keep them well out of reach

❌if you think your pet has ingested something toxic, or they are showing signs of toxicity such as vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors or lethargy, contact your vet immediately❌

Otis 💜

Otis managed to get into his owner's muesli and so had to be given an injection to make him sick, just in case he had eaten any raisins. This was him looking very cheery just before going home!
