Vet Nichola and her kids met an extra special little guy called Frankie today!

Frankie is a neighbourhood icon. He even has his own sign which explains that he’s super friendly and loves pats (and that he’s not lost!).

Can you guess where Nichola and her family are this week? The waves were huge today! We’ve had a wonderful trip visiting friends and family ❤️.

Nichola is looking forward to seeing everyone next week 😊.

It's only 6 weeks until the inaugural Leith Vets, Festival Dog Show! 🐾🐩🐶

It was such a shame that last year's festival was cancelled due to the storm- something that has only happened once in the festival's 119 year history.

We will have the same popular categories back this year.

Registrations are now open and you can register via our website.

£5 entry per dog and per category and all proceeds this year will go to the fantastic Edinburgh Cat Protection League charity in Casselbank st, leith. The guys there do a wonderful job finding great homes for local cats in need.

We're excited to offer free entry to last year's entrants!

This year's show will start at 1pm in front of our stall (garden stalls 21-26 ) between Hermitage Place and Links Gardens.

Please come down and say hi to the team on the day. We'll have a big raffle again this year with prizes kindly donated by local businesses 😊.

Diabetes awareness

Poor Timmy was rushed in to see us this afternoon by his worried owner Ayren after Timmy was found unconscious at home.

Timmy is a diabetic and Nichola quickly realised following a blood glucose test that Timmy was having a hypoglycaemic episode as his blood glucose was dangerously low at 2.9. We were unable to measure his body temperature it was so low.

As we were calculating and drawing up his emergency IV dextrose dose RVN Cameron realised that Timmy’s condition had seriously deteriorated. Nichola gave an IV dextrose injection and within seconds his heart rate was back to normal.

Over the next 2hr our final vet student Rachael and Nichola monitored Timmy closely and his temperature slowly came up to normal with a bair hugger warming device.

Ayren from .fitness and the whole team were so happy and relieved to discharge Timmy home tonight. He was wolfing down food and back to his normal self. Timmy will be monitored very closely tonight and over the next few days.

It is super important to transport any diabetic patients experiencing hypoglycaemia as quickly as possible to a vet. You can try rubbing honey or golden syrup on their gums if they are conscious.

Important information for any clients planning to travel to the EU this summer using a European pet passport.

From April 22nd an EU pet passport issued to or held by a pet owner who is resident in GB will no longer be valid for travel with pets from GB to the EU. This includes EU pet passports issued in Ireland and Northern Ireland issued before April 22nd.

EU pet passports will only be able to be used by people who’s main residence is in the EU.

GB residents travelling to the EU with a pet dog, cat or ferret will need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for travel from April 22nd 2026. There are no changes to entry requirements to GB.

This could really affect some people’s summer travel plans so please get in touch asap if you are travelling soon and think you may require us to complete an AHC for you and your pet.

May is hypertension awareness month.

This is Olive. She’s 22.5 years old which makes her older than our RVN Sarah! ❤️

We love seeing Olive every 3-6 months to check her blood pressure and kidney function with blood testing as she is the sweetest girl. Olive has chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure and she is on medications to help support her kidneys and reduce her blood pressure.

In November 2024 her retinas (the ‘camera’ at the back of the eye) detached secondary to high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease and she lost her sight. We’re so pleased to report that with medications and prescription food to support her kidneys and medication to reduce her blood pressure, Olive’s retinas reattached and she regained her eyesight and she’s been living her best life!

In May and June we will be offering free blood pressure checks and urine testing with a nurse for any cats over the age of 10 who haven’t had their blood pressure checked in the past 6 months. You don’t need to be registered with us.

If our nurses have any concerns then a consultation and blood test with one of our lovely vets will be recommended.

ISFM recommend regular blood pressure checks for older cats and Olive is a fantastic example of how important it is to catch hypertension and chronic kidney disease early as there’s so much we can do to support them 😻.

You may have heard another accent in reception or on the phone recently?

Lovely Niamh is our new receptionist(a) and administrator 😊. Niamh is originally from Northern Ireland but she's lived in England and Scotland since she was 19.

Niamh has been working in the veterinary profession for 5 years now so she's very experienced with all things veterinary and she's also super lovely! Please say hi to Niamh next time you meet her.

We snapped this photo of Niamh with the gorgeous Odin when Odin came in for his appointment this week. Odin was looking super handsome in his bow tie 🎀.

Did you know we now have 5 different nationalities of staff members at Leith Vets? That's 9 Scots 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, 2 Aussies 🇦🇺, 1 Czech 🇨🇿, 1 Englishwoman🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿and 1 Northern Irishwoman.

We’re still looking for our 4th RVN!

Due to continued growth, we’ve been steadily adding staff members to our fabulous team 😊.

Could you be our next RVN?

Leith Vets is an independent, family owned practice which opened in September 2023. The practice is growing steadily. We now have 4 full time vets, 3 full time RVNs, a VCA and 3 full time equivalent receptionists. We’re LGBTQ+ friendly :)

Leith is a fun and vibrant community which appreciates and embraces independent businesses. The Links is at the end of our street and is a beautiful place to go for a stroll at lunch time.

We’re looking for an RVN who understands that a vet practice only exists because of the people within its team and the community of pets and pet owners who support it. Community involvement and client care is at the core of what we do and luckily we have some amazing clients and a fantastic team of staff.

Leith Vets is a bit unusual in the fact that nearly 50% of our patients are feline and we also look after exotic species. A large proportion of our caseload is dentistry and we perform dentistry to the highest standards so an interest in dentistry would be an advantage. Our RVNs perform the majority of our COHATs and dental radiographs. We are the only practice in Edinburgh to have gold ISFM practice accreditation so we’re focussed on providing a high level of care and low stress handling to our feline patients.

The position would 30-40hr per week spread over 3-5 week days and 1 in 4 Saturdays with a 30 min paid lunch break. We offer 5 days paid sick leave following successful completion of our probationary period. £750 CPD allowance. We are well now placed to support a new graduate RVN. Salary £28, 000- £33. 000 pro rata.

Please email your CV and a covering letter explaining what makes a good day at work for you and why you believe you would be a good candidate for the role to [email protected].

Closing date 30th April 2026.

You might’ve heard a familiar voice on bbc radio 5 this morning and seen some familiar faces on channel 5 news and BBC Scotland news tonight.

Channel 5 news visited Leith Vets to interview Nichola about the final decision from the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) following its investigation into pricing in the veterinary industry. Thank you to Catherine and Lulu for coming on tv too!

We welcomed the investigation and Nichola has been heavily involved throughout the whole process.

Overall we were pleased with the outcome as not that much is going to change at Leith Vets. We already publish prices on our website, we already give written estimates for procedures and our prescription fee isn’t going to change much either.

Hopefully the general public will now have greater transparency as to who owns veterinary practices and price differences between clinics.

Now we can get back to doing what we do best and that’s caring for the pets and people in our local community 🥰.
