Pigateers Rescue & Rehoming

Over the last few weeks, we have seen a rise in needing to rehome piggies.

But unfortunately the rescue is no longer open, and hasn’t been for some time now.
The last of the piggies that we had, sadly passed away. So that has been the journey of Pigateers come to an end.

It was sad to see the rescue close, as I have helped thousands of guineas who have been in need, due to multiple different circumstances from neglect to just needing a new family due to allergies.

I want to thank everyone for the support over the years the rescue has been open. From the adopters, to the people who help raise funds for the piggies.

That said, I will always still be here for help & information. If that’s nail trimming, advice, or being able to find another rescue.

The closest rescues in our area are the following

~ Iggle Piggle Guinea Pigs who have a Norfolk base in Downham Market
~ Piggybanksanctuary who are based in Hilgay, Norfolk (I know spaces are limited for them, and can only take sows)

I know there is a Guinea Pig & Rabbit rescue that I believe is in Terrington St Clement or Clenchworton as well. Lady works in the King’s Lynn Pets at Home (from the last time I spoke to her, she did)

I do know also, if you bought a guinea from a breeder, or rescued from a rescue centre. Then most will be able to either taken the piggies back, or help you in the process for rehoming.

There are also Facebook groups, that help to be able to find new homes for your piggies. Once I can remember the names, and find them. I will update and add them to the comment section for anyone to find.

It has been a wonderful time rescuing & rehabilitating but sadly the journey did have to come to an end. There may be a time where I reopen, but this will not be anytime in the near future. As much as I would love to still help, mentally, physically and emotionally I cannot.

We currently have some spaces open within the rescue.

I am able to currently take up to 5 sows, 2 boars (more if cages can be provided)

We do currently also have 2 loan boars looking for homes currently if anyone is interested in adopting.
These boys need to find a friend that they can be bonded with.

Meet Pumpkin

He was a last minute rescue who came from someone who had bad allergies to him and his friend Barney (Barney will be shown later).

He came to in, I was aware of his skin condition. However unfortunately Pumpkin has Scabies.

What is Scabies? And what does it entail on a guinea pigs small body & system?

We’ll scabies is a mite similar to those mites that humans get which forms scabies.
The mites are extremely small and spider-like pests, which cause extreme irritation & hair loss.
As you can see, it has spread over 50% of Pumpkins little body.
I am unsure on how long he has been dealing with his condition. But I know that I need to get it under control before it gets any worse.

I am taking my precautions of course, as scabies is zoonotic and can be passed from animal to human. Fortunately, scabies in guinea pigs rarely does spread to humans. But the precautions need for be made just not for me and my family. But also our other guineas and pets.

Pumpkin, sadly will be having to live on his own until he is cleared from his condition. Which means Barney and Pumpkin will be separated, and hopefully will be bonded back to normal. Once it has all cleared 💜

He is sadly not the first Guinea I have had in the rescue with scabies. But this is definitely less severe then what I have seen in my years of rescuing.

After a lot of messages currently coming through over the last few months via text/voicemail, email and on here, I thought I would put out something that I haven’t.

I did decide to close the rescue due to a few reasons.
I don’t currently attend to open the rescue again for the foreseen future. But maybe one day I will. That said unsure if it would be the UK or in the US.

I will continue to help with advice and keep the page open and running to be able to help those in need with Guinea advice, and I can help you find another rescue/sanctuary either for adoption or Rehoming.

I do still have a foster carer who has alot of guineas still looking for homes. However we do not rehome over the Christmas period due to so many guineas/and other animals going into rescues around this time of the year or even they come back in the new year.
We will only rehome if there is a loan guineas who is desperately in need of a friend.

Again, I will continue to help those who need it for advice.

I personally now only have 4 cavies, and those are the last 4 rescue piggies who couldn’t find homes.
As I said in a previous post, a friend took of the cavies that I had within the rescue/my own. And she has kept them with her. With me only having 2 who decided to escape their pen and were roaming my garden. They are now penned and living with another sow who came to me, and a loan boar who lives near the girls.

Hello we are Maisie & Mollie 💜💜

These two beautiful girls have been with me for a while. They’ve just not been adopted and it breaks our heart.

Us girls are timid, but do love cuddles once you have ahold of them. Maisie does like to scream at the top of her lungs when she’s picked up but has got a lot better since she first came to me.

We are still looking for their forever home.
If you can offer them their forever home, please let me know.
But we do require someone with plenty of experience with guinea pigs 💜

Mr. Twitch is still looking for his forever home 💙

He would happily live next to some piggies, so he can communicate with them.
He does enjoy living by himself and popcorns often around the cage & when out in the grass.

He’s roughly 2 years old, and is full of character.

Unfortunately cost of castration is just through the roof in our area and with me not driving I can’t travel to find a cheaper place.

Mel, Mollie, Maisie & Twitch all enjoying some sunshine and grass this afternoon. Waiting for it to be a bit cooler and sunshine wasn’t hitting the front of the house do them to go out to mow some of the grass down 😂

Mr.Twitch

I am now looking for a new home, ideally by myself but around other guinea pigs.
Unfortunately I do not get on with other male guineas, leaving me in the position of having to live on my own.
Unfortunately castration is currently too expensive for the rescue to maintain.

I am a very outgoing boy, but I do shy when you open the cage. However I absolutely love cuddles once you have ahold of me.

We are raising funds for Twitch’s castration. Which we have been quoted the most of £150 😱
How castration is now that much I do not know.

However, Twitch unfortunately does not get along with boars. And we do not want him living alone for the rest of his life. So we are raising funds to help with the castration cost!

We are currently looking around for different vets, and have emailed (shall be ringing tomorrow to see if we can get a less costly price).
But any other money raised will go into the aftercare of Twitch.

We have 150 numbers going, at £1 per number!

💜 FOSTER CARER APPRECIATION POST 💜

This is Sarah, I personally have known Sarah since I was 12 years old, and I’m 26 this May 😱

I met her through helping her out in her pet shop until I was 18 years old.
This has gone into a long standing friendship, and sort of Mother/Daughter bond between us.
She’s always there for me, and helps with the rescue.

Sarah has currently got a lot of rescue boars ranging with all ages looking for homes.
Most are bonded/paired. With the occasional sow looking for a home also.
