Check the ground temperature before you walk 🐾🔥

During a heatwave, pavements can become much hotter than the air temperature and may burn your dog's paw pads.

Try the 7-second test:

✋ Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds.

If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Instead:

✔ Choose grassy areas where possible
✔ Walk during cooler parts of the day

A simple check before heading out can help prevent painful injuries.

📢 Hot weather can be dangerous for dogs ☀️

When temperatures rise, it's best to avoid walks during the hottest parts of the day. Even if it feels manageable for us, dogs can quickly overheat and are at risk of heatstroke.

🐾 Walk early in the morning or later in the evening
🐾 Check the temperature of the pavement
🐾 Bring fresh water on every walk
🐾 Stick to shaded routes where possible
🐾 Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, lethargy or drooling

If you're unsure whether it's too hot, it's always safer to wait. Remember: a dog won't die from missing a walk, but they can die from walking when it's too hot.

🚗☀️ Never leave your dog in a parked car

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise dangerously within minutes.

Leaving a window open or parking in the shade is not enough to keep your dog safe.

🐾 Dogs cannot cool themselves as effectively as humans
🐾 Heat can build up rapidly inside a car
🐾 Heatstroke can occur in just a few minutes and can be fatal

If you're running errands and can't take your dog inside with you, the safest option is to leave them at home where they'll be cool and comfortable.

⚠️ Signs of heatstroke include:

• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Lethargy
• Vomiting
• Collapse

We were runners up for the People's Choice Award for Yorkshire, AND made the list for the National People's Choice Award Champions! 🥳
