This week, our veterinary surgeons Luis amd Ella removed a foreign body via exploratory laparotomy

An ingested foreign body can cause a number of symptoms and complications in cats, from simple vomiting to a dangerous internal injury or intestinal obstruction. 🩺

In cases in which an object or foreign body is not passed or expelled naturally, it may be necessary to have it removed surgically.

If a foreign body is suspected, abdominal radiographs (X-rays) will be performed.
In addition, it may be recommended to have blood and urine tests to assess whether the patient's health has been compromised by the obstruction, 🩻

If an obstruction is diagnosed or suspected, exploratory surgery is generally recommended.
Exploratory laparotomy, also known as ex lap simply means an operation, where a vet opens your pet’s abdomen (belly) to explore its contents.

This week our amazing surgeon luis preformed a Femoral Head Ostectomy

An FHO, or femoral head ostectomy, is a surgical procedure that aims to restore pain-free mobility to a diseased or damaged hip
This restores mobility to the hip by removing the head of the femur. This removes the ball of the ball-and-socket joint, leaving just an empty socket. The muscles of the leg will initially hold the femur in place, and, over time, scar tissue will form between the acetabulum and the femur to provide cushioning that is referred to as a 'false joint'. Although this joint is anatomically very different from a normal hip joint, it provides pain-free mobility in most patients.

This week our night team Liron and kirsty were present with milo who had a Gdv and needed quick surgical attention 🐕
our wonderful team performed this life saving surgery out of hours to save milo and give him the best chance possible

A GDV (Gastric dilatation and volvulus) is when the stomach bloats and twists around itself. Once the stomach twists, it quickly starts to fill with gas, causing severe and life threatening bloat. The only cure for a GDV is an operation to reverse the twist. 🩺

Symptoms of GDV

🐾Bloat (a swollen tummy)

🐾Retching (trying to vomit without bringing anything up)

🐾Vomiting

🐾Excessive drooling

🐾Stomach pain

🐾Pale gums

🐾Collapse.

Symptoms of a GDV tend to start very suddenly, and get worse quickly. Veterinary intervention is needed as quickly as possible for urgent surgery.

Meet Hank who came in for a cryptorchid castration 💙

Cryptorchidism is when one or both testicles fail to drop into the sc***um.
when a male puppy is born, his testicles are inside his body. Then, over a period of approximately two weeks, they start dropping into the sc***um through a narrow channel called the ‘inguinal canal’. 🐕
The process can take a little longer in some dogs, but if both testicles haven’t dropped by 6 months old it’s very unlikely that they will.

Retained testicles can cause problems such as becoming cancerous or twisted, both potentially life-threatening conditions, so it’s important to have them removed while your dog is young.🩺

Fortunately, it’s possible to remove most undescended testicles surgically. However, the operation will depend on where his testicles are sitting.
If they are in his abdomen (tummy), or if they’re stuck in the inguinal canal (in the groin).
Removing retained testicles is more complex and usually takes longer than normal neutering, especially if they are difficult to find.🐾
