This week our Veterinary surgeon luis 👨‍⚕️
Preformed guinea pig neutering 🩺

In most cases, only male guinea pigs are neutered. Neutering female guinea pigs can be very risky and should only be done for emergency reasons.

Unlike rabbits, neutering male guinea pigs doesn’t affect their behaviour and will not reduce fighting between a pair. Therefore, we advice to only neuter male guinea pigs if they cannot be paired with a male due to fighting, and need to be paired with a female.

Male guinea pigs can be neutered from 3-4 months or as soon as their testicles are visible.

⚠️The importance of spaying⚠️

A pyometra, sometimes called a “pyo”, is an infection inside the uterus (womb). Any unneutered (entire) female dog is at risk of developing a pyometra,

During a season, hormones are released, which cause changes to the womb. These changes increase the risk of bacteria, which causes an infection in the womb once the season is over. As the infection develops, the womb fills with pus.

Pyometra can be either ‘open’ or ‘closed’:

• An open pyometra is when the cervix (womb entrance) is open, meaning you are likely to see blood and pus coming from your dog’s v***a.

• A closed pyometra is when the womb entrance is shut, meaning you are unlikely to see any discharge. A closed pyometra is particularly dangerous because it puts the womb at risk of bursting.

Most dogs with a pyo will need emergency surgery to remove the pyometra. This surgery removes the womb and ovaries.

Mark has been busy at Mead performing diagnostic ultrasounds. 🩺

Pet ultrasounds are a safe and non-invasive method of imaging, which uses sound waves to help vets visualise a pet’s internal organs and diagnose conditions such as those affecting the heart, liver, kidneys and bladder.

An ultrasound gives us information as to whether the structure of a pet’s organ is as it should be and is functionally operating correctly. Ultrasound is a very safe technology for dogs and cats, as sound waves do not damage or affect the body during the procedure.

This week our lead vet Mark removed a foreign body, using a laparoscopic technique.

How it works-
For foreign bodies in the stomach, a small incision is made in the stomach wall, allowing for the insertion of a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) and surgical instruments. The foreign body is then grasped and removed. For foreign bodies in the small intestine, the loop of intestine containing the object is exteriorized, an incision is made, and the object is removed.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Removal:
Minimally Invasive:
Compared to traditional open surgery, laparoscopic surgery involves smaller incisions, leading to faster recovery times and less postoperative pain.
Improved Visualization:
Laparoscopy provides a clear view of the abdominal cavity, allowing surgeons to accurately locate and remove the foreign body.

🐇Rabbit neutering🐇

We highly recommend neutering all pet rabbits to prevent unwanted pregnancies and avoid health problems like ovarian and testicular cancer.
Neutered rabbits also tend to be more sociable/less likely to fight with other bunnies.

🐇Neutering a male rabbit is called ‘castration’ and involves removing the testicles. This can be done from around ten weeks of age.

🐇Neutering a female rabbit is called ‘spaying’ and involves removing the ovaries and womb. This can be done from around five months of age.

Rabbits are able to get pregnant at around three months old, so males and females must be kept separate from this age (ideally a bit before), until after they have been neutered.

Male rabbits can remain fertile for up to six weeks after they have been castrated, but females are sterile immediately.
