🐓The Chicken Heist!🐓

🐾Meet Bert 🐾

On Tuesday evening, Bert was a walk-in (or should we say run-in!) emergency for our out of hours team after a particularly ambitious snack theft…

Bert had chewed and swallowed one whole raw chicken drumstick and then attempted to swallow a second. Unfortunately, the second drumstick became lodged in his oesophagus, leaving him choking, coughing, vomiting and pawing at his mouth.🍗

Despite his predicament, Bert was still wagging his tail throughout the whole experience! 💚

Our night team — Night Vet Liron, Night RVN Kirsty and Twilight RVN Lily — quickly got Bert through into our prep room where he was anaesthetised, intubated and x-rayed before the lodged drumstick was successfully removed using our endoscope📹

Thankfully, Bert made a very quick recovery from his anaesthetic and was soon heading home with his relieved family🏡🐶

This case is a great reminder that if your pet is choking, gagging, retching, vomiting, pawing at their mouth, or showing signs of distress, please call us immediately on 01322 223311📞

🐾 A Friendly Reminder About Appointments 🐾

At Mead Veterinary Centre, we understand that life can be busy and plans sometimes change. If you’re unable to attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible.

Missed appointments mean that another pet who may need urgent care misses the opportunity to be seen. By giving us advance notice, we can offer that appointment to another patient and help reduce waiting times for everyone.

📞 If you can’t make your appointment, please call the practice to cancel or rearrange.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and for helping us provide the best possible care to all of our patients. ❤️🐶🐱🐰

🫶🏼 PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CARE🫶🏼

🐾 Meet Iris & Vet Bella! 🐾

Today we’re shining the spotlight on the lovely Iris, pictured here with one of our vets Bella following her spay procedure. 💚

Spaying is a routine operation that offers a number of long-term health and welfare benefits for your dog, including:

✔️ Preventing unwanted pregnancies
✔️ Eliminating the risk of womb infections (pyometra)
✔️ Reducing the risk of mammary (breast) tumours when performed at the appropriate age
✔️ Preventing seasons and associated bleeding
✔️ Helping avoid certain hormone-related health issues

Every pet is different, and the best time to spay can vary depending on breed, size and individual circumstances. Our team is always happy to discuss the options and help you make the right decision for your pet.

Iris was a superstar patient and is now recovering well at home with plenty of cuddles and rest. 🐶✨

If you’d like to discuss spaying your dog, please contact the team at 01322 223311

🦔 Wildlife Case Spotlight 🦔

At Mead Veterinary Centre, we're proud to help wildlife wherever we can.

Recently, a hedgehog was brought to us by a concerned member of the public after being seen dragging its right hind leg.

Following a thorough examination, our veterinary team diagnosed soft tissue damage. To help with recovery, the hedgehog was treated with anti-inflammatory pain relief (NSAIDs) before being transferred to Thorne Rescue for specialist hydrotherapy and rehabilitation.

Cases like this highlight the importance of the public, veterinary professionals, and wildlife rescue organisations working together to give injured wildlife the best possible chance of recovery💚

If you find an injured wild animal, please call your local wildlife hospital, or call us on 01322 223311 🦊🦔

🌙 OUT-OF-HOURS EMERGENCY CASE 🌙

Meet Nu***ck ❤️

Nu***ck is a 2 year old Spynx cat had a small lump on her leg that suddenly grew dramatically in size over a very short period of time. Due to her being a hairless breed this was apparent immediately and her owner became concerned and knew she needed urgent veterinary attention.

On Friday night she was seen out of hours by our night vet Barbara and night nurse Rebecca, who safely sedated her before lancing and draining the abscess. The procedure provided immediate relief and allowed us to thoroughly clean and treat the affected area.

As you can see from the photos, despite her unexpected late-night visit, Nu***ck remained her usual curious self and even helped Barbara with her paperwork during recovery! 🐱✍️

Abscesses can develop quickly and become extremely painful, particularly in cats. If you notice a swelling that is rapidly increasing in size, changes in your pet's behaviour, or any signs of discomfort, it's important to seek veterinary advice as soon as possible💚

If you become concerned about your pet and think they could have an abscess, please call the practice in 01322 223311 📞

🌾 It’s grass seed season! 🐾

Meet Bailey 💚

Bailey was brought to our out-of-hours service to see vet Barbara after developing discomfort from a grass seed that had worked its way into his ear. Grass seeds may look harmless, but they can cause significant irritation, infection, and can even migrate deeper into the ear canal if left untreated.

Our out of hours team carefully examined Bailey and safely removed the grass seed under sedation, leaving him much more comfortable and on the road to recovery.

Signs your pet may have a grass seed in their ear include:👂 Head shaking👂 Scratching at the ear👂 Sensitivity or pain around the ear👂 Sudden ear infections or discharge

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to seek veterinary attention promptly.

We’re here for you when your pets need us most — including out of hours. 🐶💚

Don't forgot our VIP plan includes 10% off of our out of hours service! 💸

🚨 Diesel’s Bin-Raiding Adventure! 🚨

Meet Diesel, a 4-year-old XL Bully with a talent for getting himself into trouble when nobody is looking! 🫣

After helping himself to the contents of the household bin after a BBQ, Diesel managed to eat an astonishing:

🍗 15 chicken wings
🥓 2 pork belly bones
🍖 Ribs

While it might seem harmless, cooked bones can be incredibly dangerous for dogs. They can splinter, causing serious internal injuries, intestinal blockages, perforations, and in some cases can become life-threatening emergencies.

Diesel was brought to us quickly, and our team acted fast. Following assessment, vets Mark and Radu performed an exploratory laparotomy to safely remove the large quantity of bones from his stomach.

The surgery was a success, and we’re delighted to report that Diesel is now recovering well and back to enjoying life with his family. 💚

This case is an important reminder to keep food waste and bins securely out of reach of curious pets. Even the most loving and well-behaved dogs can be tempted by the smell of leftovers!

📞 If you are ever concerned that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, contact us immediately on 01322 223311.

Don't forget that our VIP plan includes 10% off of surgeries as well as all of your preventative treatments🤩
