Support our work today – every horse and person we help starts with you! The Racehorse Rescue Centre (RRC) is a registered charity No. 1150864 based in Carlisle, serving the whole UK. It is an Approved Rescue and Re-training Centre by the RoR. By rescuing ex racehorses we give them a secure safe environment and the opportunity to move onto new careers once they have finished racin

g. We are not just a Rescue Centre
We provide free programmes to disadvantaged groups throughout the UK to help them develop their skills in the community such as injured soldiers, probation services, disabled, employment services, colleges and therapy for people suffering from trauma or depression. We are 100% volunteer run so any help goes direct to the horses and not on salaries. The Racehorse Rescue Centre works with the community through its highly motivated volunteer team. Horses that come to the Centre are given time to go back to their roots and allowed to socialise with the other horses to build up development and confidence. We retrain ex racehorses to their best ability and find new caring homes that will secure their future. Other horses that work well with our programmes will stay at the Centre to help educate the community in the importance of how equine therapy can help disadvantaged groups. We have other older horses that are harder to re-home and these will stay with us if no homes can be found. The RRC do not sell horses on and keeps ownership for the rest of their lives. The Racehorse Rescue Centre relies on donations from the caring public, companies and its trustees. Any funding is spent directly on the horses and to help secure their future. The trustees have been rescuing ex racehorses for the past 25 years and started the charity in 2010 to help create awareness of the problem and to get the community more involved. We believe it has a bright future ahead thanks to the hard work the volunteers put in and with the support of the community throughout the world we hope to continue to grow.

Our new arrival after giving ad-lib haylage and conditioning hard feed. Vet check’s and farriers.
It is not cheap to turn these horses around and get them fit for rehoming. Now it’s spending time getting fit.

Thank you to the donor who donated £5,000 to pay for our haylage bill. We were getting very worried we couldn’t secure our next supply for the year.
It costs a lot to turn these horses around, haylage, hard feeds, medication, vets, farriers, equine dentists and the many hours spent making them suitable for rehoming.

Many don’t get that chance and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers and you, who put your hands in your pockets and help us to continue providing the best care possible for them.

I’m not moving! Our volunteers work hard every day of the week but there is always time to give a little love.

'Very sensible' - Racing cancelled across UK but historic Carlisle meeting to go ahead 🤷
If schools are closing early and warnings of not to travel on the trains, why must horses race in these conditions?

We have brought our horses in to our cool stables where everyone including the volunteers are comfortable in this heat.

We will be preparing the stables tomorrow to bring the horses in during this heatwave. Horses can suffer the heat too and our insulated stables keep the horses cool.
