AUGUST PET OF THE MONTH
Toby- 12 years old

BREED DSH

HOW WE HELPED Toby was adopted from Woodgreen animal Shelter when he was 4 years old. Not only is he handsome, he is also very loving, although only on his own terms! Like many ginger cats, he is a strong character with rather firm opinions on life!

A year after coming to live with his owners, Toby developed a persistent dry cough. X-rays of his chest and cytology led to a diagnosis of Feline Asthma. It took a month or so for Toby to get used to daily medication via an inhaler, but he is now completely used to the daily routine, appearing at his owner’s feet when his medicine is due. His asthma comes and goes a little and can be worse in the summer months, but is generally very well managed.

He came into the surgery a few months ago as he was drooling a lot and refusing his treats. He responded well to pain relief and returned for dental treatment, including 4 extractions. He was out-of-sorts for a few weeks following the proceedure, spending most of his time outside, but happily he is now fully recovered and back to his usual cheerful self. Congratulations Toby!

During the spring and summer months, it's very common to find baby birds on the ground. Birds take far better care of their babies than humans can, so if you find a baby bird, keep your pets away and follow our advice below.

We have been receiving lots of fledgling birds who are not quite able to fly. It’s normal for most garden birds to spend a few days on the ground between leaving the nest and flying away. The parents are usually close by, keeping an eye out and supplying them with food. If they are not in immediate danger or obviously injured, they stand the best chance of survival if left alone. The RSPCA have some useful info on fledgling birds, and you can always give us a call if you find one that does appear to be injured or at immediate risk.

During the spring and summer months, it's very common to find baby birds on the ground. Birds take far better care of their babies than humans can, so if you find a baby bird, keep your pets away and follow our advice below.

We are running a dog show in the evening on Saturday 28th June for the Stapleford Village Weekend!
We take the safety of our canine companions very seriously, which is why we have opted to have the dog show in the evening and under cover with plenty of shade, water and air flow to keep your dogs cool. At the moment, the weather looks manageable but if we deem the heat to be too much closer to the date, we may reschedule to keep your pets safe.

The dog classes include:

Handsomest Dog

Prettiest Girl

Cutest pup (< 12 months)

Golden oldie (>7 years)

Best rescue

Young handler (

The Dog Show is back - at a new time to keep our furry friends cool and happy! Hosted and judged by Church Street Vets, now at their new Stapleford location.

Do you love animals AND Cake?

If so, round up the dog and the kids, and head over to the Church Street Vets Open Day!

Our independent, family-run surgery, Clarendon Street Vets, has been caring for the pets of central Cambridge for over 60 years.

This Saturday, 26th April, from 1-4pm, we will be throwing open the doors of our new, Stapleford, branch surgery.

Joint practice owner, Harriet O'Riordan, says "Patrick and I are very happy to bring our years of experience, and compassionate, client focused veterinary care to Stapleford. Church Street Vets will have the same core values as Clarendon Street, offering a warm, community atmosphere, a caring team and outstanding clinical care. "

Church Street Vets is conveniently located at 65 London Road, Stapleford, CB22 5DG, with ample parking and facilities including a state-of-the-art operating theatre, dental X-ray and separate dog and cat waiting rooms and hospitalisation facilities.

The Open Day will feature practice tours, dog agility, animal encounters, ferret-racing, face-painting, quizzes, games and a raffle. There will also be stalls selling plants and second-hand books, and loads of cake, with all proceeds going to conservation charity ‘From the Brink’.

If all that isn't enough, there is a rumour that vet, Patrick, will be dressed as a giant chicken!

We really hope to see you there ...

Patrick, Harriet, and all the Church Street Vets team.
