Meet the gorgeous Willow, this week’s superstar at Dogwood Referrals! 💖

Willow had a rare condition called Pes Varus, causing her leg to bend inward, something we occasionally see in dachshunds 🐶.

Working with Fusion Implants, we used custom-made guides to plan and perform surgery that straightened her leg with precision.
She’s now healing brilliantly and already back to her cheeky self! 💪💕

✨ Swipe to see her transformation!

Leave Willow some love in the comments!

🐝Bee and wasp stings🐝

Bees and wasps are essential for pollinating our natural environment. While we’re aware of the risk of being stung, this isn’t the case for dogs, and flying insects are often a source of curiosity and entertainment.

Your dog may get stung at some point and most of the time, a sting will cause only minor pain and irritation. Don’t try to pick out the sting with tweezers, as this can squeeze more venom out. Instead, use a rigid piece of card to gently scrape the stinger away. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply to the area to reduce swelling and ease the pain.

However, if your dog is stung several times inside the mouth or throat it can be serious and will require a trip to your vet. Just like humans, some dogs may have a severe allergic reaction to the chemicals in the sting.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

⚠ General weakness
⚠ Breathing difficulties
⚠ Excessive swelling

If your dog is having an allergic reaction, contact your vet immediately, as the swelling can block the airway and become serious.

Flystrike is a serious condition in rabbits caused by flies laying eggs on their body. These eggs hatch out into maggots that feed on your rabbit. Sadly, flystrike is often fatal within 24 hours.

The most important way to spot flystrike is by regularly checking their fur for signs of eggs or maggots. However, some rabbits can show symptoms through their behaviour.

If you spot maggots or eggs on your rabbit’s fur, contact your vet immediately to arrange emergency treatment. Don’t dunk your rabbit in water. It’s important to handle them with care as flyblown rabbits are usually in pain and can in some cases be very unwell and weak, which wetting will only make worse.

Prevention is essential to keep your rabbits safe from flystrike:

🐰 Check them over every day, with special attention around their bottom and tail. This should be increased to at least twice a day in summer.
🐰 Keep their environment clean with fresh bedding.
🐰 Make sure your rabbit’s diet is primarily hay-based, with a small portion of fresh vegetables and an even smaller amount of high-quality pellets (a ratio of 80-15-5).
🐰 Keep an eye out for sores or open wounds and ensure they’re kept clean and dry.
🐰 There are products available to protect rabbits that are at a higher risk of flystrike, so speak to your vet for advice that’s tailored to your pet.

Blue-green algae can be highly toxic to pets, causing fatal liver damage and long-term health conditions. Read about how to protect your pet this summer.

High volumes of bacteria can form ‘blooms’ which can be visible in water, creating the look of pea soup.

The symptoms of blue-green algae poisoning are:

⚠ Vomiting/being sick
⚠ Diarrhoea
⚠ Seizures/fitting
⚠ Weakness/collapse/unconsciousness
⚠ Disorientation/confusion
⚠ Excessive drooling
⚠ Breathing difficulties

If you suspect your pet has been in contact with blue-green algae, or if they show any of these symptoms after entering water, you should see a vet straight away. Although there’s no antidote to the toxins, your vet will attempt to flush them out of the body before they take hold.

Beach Advice for Dogs

If you’re spending time at the beach, it’s best to stay with your dog as they enjoy splashing around. This way, you can keep an eye on the tide coming in or the size of the waves. You can also make sure that your dog isn’t drinking too much seawater. The high salt content of seawater can cause problems for your dog’s stomach. Try and make sure they have had a good drink of fresh water before they start paddling.

Rock pools provide a great opportunity to explore but look out for sea urchins and jellyfish that can give a nasty sting if your dog gets too close. Symptoms of a sting include vomiting, swelling, excessive licking and difficulty breathing. If you suspect your dog has been stung, contact your nearest vet immediately.

If you think that your pet may be allergic to something, then you should see your vet. Your vet will perform tests to ensure that there is no other reason for your pet’s skin problems.

Treatments may include oral medications e.g. antihistamines or ciclosporin, nutritional supplements, topical treatments, immunotherapy, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments, and will be determined by your pet’s particular allergy and their individual lifestyle.

Your vet may also suggest removing the allergens from your pet’s environment if possible.

In the vast majority of cases, atopy can be controlled, and pets can lead a normal and healthy life. Since it's a lifelong condition, regular checks with your vet are recommended to maintain control and ensure your pet is as comfortable and healthy as possible.

Which dog breeds are more likely to develop atopy?

Atopy and skin allergies can develop in all breeds of dog, but there are some breeds that are more at risk such as:

🔹 West Highland White Terrier
🔹 Boston Terrier
🔹 English Bulldog
🔹 Labrador Retriever
🔹 Bichon Frise
🔹 Sha Pei
🔹 Dalmatian

This is because the condition is caused by an inappropriate immune reaction, as opposed to the allergen itself. It’s worth checking with your vet if you think your dog may be suffering.

Itchy scratchy pets?

Atopy, or atopic dermatitis, is one of the most common skin conditions in both cats and dogs. It can cause severe itching, redness, and rashes, often resulting in skin infections.

Atopy can be caused by a number of common allergens in the natural environment, including pollen from grasses, trees and weeds, mold spores, house dust mites and insects.

Atopic dermatitis tends to be seasonal, particularly if it’s caused by pollen in the natural environment. Spring and summer are often the most aggravating time for pets with atopy.
