Heat wave preparation for our pets and reptiles.
HEATWAVE WARNING FOR ALL PET OWNERS 🚨
With temperatures soaring today and over the coming days, we are entering a high-risk zone for our pets. At Kim’s Reptile Retreat, we want to make one thing crystal clear: extreme heat is not just uncomfortable, it is deadly.☠️
We protect our young children in heatwaves, and our pets are family too. They rely on us completely to keep them safe. Here is what you must do right now to protect your reptiles, dogs, and all domestic animals.
🦎 REPTILE SAFETY & ENCLOSURE MANAGEMENT
Reptiles are cold blooded and rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature, but they cannot survive being cooked inside their own tanks.
* Monitor Enclosure Temperatures Constantly: Keep a close eye on digital gauges. If the ambient temperature inside the enclosure passes their required safety threshold or ruins their cool side gradient, turn off all heat sources and UVB lights during the hottest parts of the day. Missing a few hours of light or heat won't harm them; overheating will kill them.
* Hydration is Critical: Mist high humidity species frequently (like Crested Geckos, Eastern Casquehead Iguanas, and tropical lizards). Ensure every single reptile has fresh water available.
* Provide Soaking Areas & Fresh Greens: Provide tortoises and land species with shallow water trays or bowls for drinking and soaking. Offer fresh veggies to tortoises to help boost hydration.
* Guarantee Shade & Cool Zones: All reptiles require shade and a cool area in their setup to thermoregulate.
* Outdoor Runs & Enclosures: If you keep tortoises or other animals outside, ensure they have shade. We cover outdoor runs with a sheet, this blocks direct sunlight while keeping maximum airflow.
* Room Airflow & AC: Air conditioning and fans in your reptile room (or whatever room your animals are kept in) are invaluable. Keep air moving and lower ambient room temps.
💡 Think of it this way: An overheated terrarium is just like leaving a dog inside a hot car 🥵 it bakes them alive without air, leading to organ failure or death. Do not let your enclosure become a greenhouse trap.
🐕 DOG SAFETY: NO WALKS & NO HOT CARS
❌ DO NOT WALK YOUR DOGS IN THIS HEAT.
It is not fair, and it is not a pleasure for them. Pavements heat up like frying pans and destroy paw pads, while physical exertion in hot weather causes rapid heatstroke. We have four dogs ourselves, and they will be missing walks during this heatwave, or having early and late walks if possible.
A missed walk won't kill your dog a walk in extreme heat CAN and WILL. Keep them indoors with fans, cool mats, or shade.
❌ NEVER LEAVE A DOG IN A CAR.
Not for "just two minutes," not even with the windows cracked. Temperatures inside a stationary vehicle spike to lethal levels within minutes.
Stay Vigilant
Do not wait until your pet is showing signs of heat distress to take action. Check your setups now, switch off extra heat lamps if room temperatures are spiking, and keep everyone cool and hydrated.
