Eggs, raw or cooked, are an excellent addition to the diet of pregnant and nursing dogs because they provide highly digestible protein, healthy fats, and essential vitamins that support both mum and developing pups.

The rich nutrient profile helps maintain her energy levels, supports healthy milk production, and contributes to strong skin, coat, and muscle condition during this demanding period.

Finely crushed eggshells can also be used as a natural calcium source, helping to support bone strength and replenish the extra calcium a nursing mother uses while feeding her litter.

When fed in moderation, eggs are an affordable, nourishing way to give breeding females the extra support they need.

Microchipping is not just for cats and dogs, but rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets can also be chipped.

Losing your pet can be traumatic for both you and your pet, having a microchip can help reunite them should they become lost.

Cats and dogs must be microchipped by law and you could face a £500 fine for each pet not chipped.

Call Jan on 07789658034 to book your cat for a microchip.

When deciding whether a bitch is ready for a litter, physical maturity is only part of the picture. Emotional maturity matters just as much.

A girl may be old enough on paper, but that doesn’t always mean she’s emotionally ready to cope with pregnancy, whelping and the demands of motherhood. Confidence, resilience, tolerance of stress, ability to settle, and how she copes with pressure all play a role in how well she manages a litter.

An emotionally immature girl may struggle with the constant contact, the loss of routine, or the responsibility of caring for puppies. This can show as anxiety, restlessness, over‑protectiveness, avoidance, or difficulty coping, not because she’s a “bad” mother, but because she wasn’t ready yet.

Responsible breeding means being honest about this. Sometimes the kindest decision is to wait, to allow time for confidence to develop, for life experience to build, and for emotional balance to settle.

This is where mentors and support networks are invaluable. Talking things through with someone experienced can help you assess readiness beyond age or health tests alone.

Giving a bitch time to mature emotionally is part of protecting her wellbeing, and giving her future puppies the best possible start.

When raising a litter, it’s easy to focus on weights, feeds and milestones, but the emotional wellbeing of the mum is just as important as her physical care.

Pregnancy, whelping and raising puppies are demanding. Even the most confident bi***es can become anxious, unsettled or overwhelmed. Hormonal changes, exhaustion, constant nursing and lack of rest all take a toll, and stress can affect both mum and pups.

Quiet time, routine, reassurance and respecting her emotional limits matter. So does recognising when she needs support, whether that’s reducing stimulation, stepping in to help with puppies, or asking for veterinary advice.

Breeders also need support here. Having a mentor or trusted network to talk through behaviour changes, worries or gut feelings can make a huge difference. You don’t need to handle it alone, and noticing when mum isn’t coping is a sign of responsibility, not failure.
A settled mum raises stronger puppies, and her mental health deserves just as much care.

Thinking About Adding a New Dog to Your Family? Consider a UK Native Breed

When choosing a dog, many people are drawn to the breeds they see everywhere, but over 30 of Britain and Ireland’s native dog breeds are now classed as “Vulnerable” by The Kennel Club**, with fewer than 300 puppies registered each year.
These breeds are part of our living heritage, and some are at real risk of disappearing.

So why should you consider one?

• Bred for UK life
Native breeds were shaped by British weather, countryside and community life, from gundogs and herders to loyal family companions.

• Predictable temperaments
With long, well‑documented histories, native breeds often have stable, well‑understood characteristics, helping you choose a dog that truly fits your household.

• Protecting genetic diversity
Choosing one of these breeds supports responsible UK breeders and helps preserve genetic diversity and long‑term breed health.

• Less about fashion, more about fit
The right dog isn’t always the most popular one. A lesser‑known native breed may actually be the perfect match for your lifestyle.

By choosing a vulnerable native breed, you’re not just gaining a wonderful companion, you’re helping to safeguard part of the UK’s canine heritage for future generations.

Choose thoughtfully. Choose responsibly. Consider native

Raising a litter isn’t just practical work, it’s an emotional journey, and one that comes with real highs and very real lows.

There’s joy in watching puppies grow, but there’s also exhaustion, anxiety, and moments of deep worry. Sleepless nights, constant checking, hard decisions, setbacks you can’t fix, and losses you never forget. Even experienced breeders can find those moments isolating.

That’s why having a mentor or support network matters so much. Someone you can message at 2am, someone who understands when you’re scared, second guessing yourself, or quietly grieving. Breeding should never be done in isolation, emotionally or practically.

Responsible breeders don’t just raise puppies, they carry responsibility, self doubt, hope, and heartache, often all at once. Having trusted support doesn’t make you less capable, it makes you stronger and better equipped to cope when things don’t go to plan.

Happy World Midwives Day, or should we say Widwoof! Supporting breeders and small animal owners through every stage of reproduction is at the heart of what I do. My services include ovarian cytology to help pinpoint optimal mating timing, pregnancy scanning for small mammals to provide early reassurance and planning support, and microchipping to ensure animals are correctly identified and legally compliant. Whether you’re preparing for new arrivals or caring for breeding animals, my aim is to offer knowledgeable, calm, and compassionate support when it matters most.

Spring is here — and the CGC needs your help.
Their research has already transformed the health of so many breeds, but there’s still a £90,000 funding gap to keep vital projects going this year.
If your breed has benefited from their work, or will in the future, please take a moment to support them. Every donation makes a real difference.
