Antibiotics in Vet Practice

Occasionally, antibiotics are used to prevent infection, where an infection is considered very likely, or where infection could be catastrophic (such as after surgeries like a hip replacement).

However, bacteria can develop a resistance to antibiotics. As pet owners, you can help protect from antibiotic-resistant infections by giving all medications as prescribed, including finishing the course, and returning unused or leftover medication to the clinic for safe disposal.

If you’re thinking of introducing a dog to your family, the two most common routes are adopting a rescue via a shelter or charity, or finding a puppy - ideally from a responsible and ethical breeder.

Bringing any pet into your home requires careful thought, commitment and dedication. Each route comes with pros and cons and a different set of responsibilities to consider. We’ve examined some of them here: bit.ly/4k34pj0

Our Charity Of The Year: Hearing Dogs!

All aboard with Hearing Dogs Gus who went for a little adventure on the train.
Gus is in the final stages of his hearing dog training and did a super job keeping his focus on his volunteer trainer when they were out and about. Plus, he was the paw-fect passenger for the trip.

It's so important that Gus is comfortable using public transport and visiting new places so that when he meets his future deaf partner, Gus can confidently accompany them wherever they might go.

Ask us in practice how you can donate to our charity of the year, Hearing Dogs.

High Blood Pressure in Pets

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is common in older cats and dogs. Where symptoms are shown, they are more likely due to an underlying disease process such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or heart disease.

For some patients, hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms until organ damage occurs. For this reason, we
recommend annual routine blood pressure checks for cats and dogs over 7 years old.

Did you see some of the amazing dogs at Cruft's this year either in person or on the telly?

Our MiNight Vet Margaret was there on hound day presenting her team of Afghan Hounds!

Zanti and her two sons, Baldur and Lando trotted their stuff up to 2nd and 3rd places in a highly competitive and large class's with over 140 Afghan hounds that had entered that day! Zanti is an UK champion and is one of the top Afghan hounds in the country, with high hopes that her offspring will follow in her fluffy footsteps.

Grooming and preparing Afghan Hounds for dogs shows is not an easy task - this usually takes about 2hrs per dog for Margaret to prepare them but can take up to 4-5hrs with less experience or challenging coat types. Between the shows, the males wear fancy bands to help protect their coats from having any "accidents". However being show dogs does not stop these lot from having fun and exercising!

You can normally find Margaret's pack going on adventures around the Shropshire hills and even having a swim or two.

Well done Margaret! We wish you another successful year in the ring 💞

Zanti official name Ch Saxonmill Zan Zan came 3rd in Veteran.
Baldur official name Shahfoladi Thunderbird came 2nd in Post Graduate.
Lando official name Shahfoladi Sphinx Riddle At Zharook JW 4RCC - 2nd in Limit.

Did you know that cats sleep an average of 15 hours per day?
Some can even snooze for up to 20 hours! 😴 Dogs aren’t far behind them, especially seniors and puppies. Just like us, pets need quality sleep for their health and wellbeing. Today, let’s celebrate the art of napping -
whether it’s a cozy cat curled up in a sunbeam or a dog dreaming of their next adventure.

Today is World Kidney Day.

The kidneys filter waste products out of the blood into urine; when they are not working properly, these waste products start to build-up in the blood, making the animal feel unwell. You can see the common
symptoms of renal disease below.
