I recently attended a fantastic CPD workshop with Eleanor Rose Dog Training and Matt Donavan of South West Dog Skills, to further my understanding of ACE Free Work.

🫤 So, what on Earth is ACE Free Work❓

Free Work is a gentle, hands-off, low-impact activity, rooted in Animal Centred Education (ACE), that allows dogs to freely explore different sensory items, helping them to feel calm and safe.

🛁 In the salon, I find that Free Work supports dogs to settle and recover more quickly, if something excites or worries them during their visit.

🌱 Spring is here, feels good right? 🌤🙌

Homeward bound after 2 exciting days at Crufts.

Can't wait to get back in the salon and see all my lovely RPDG dogs.

I am increasingly seeing the benefit of using a more dog centered/consent-based approach in my grooming.

What this looks like in the salon...
1) Reduced use of restraints *(if safe to do so).
2) A lower table with...
3) Access ramp, where the dogs are taught safe access on/off the table.

Simple adaptations - but they give our furry companions greater autonomy and the choice to take a break if they feel uncomfortable.

7 month old Gwen is proof that with a gentle introduction and freedom to move away, dogs will quickly choose to return to the table happy and confident to continue.

NOTE - This isn't a finished groom. A first handstrip, in progress over several sessions.

♦️Ruby - Cocker Spaniel has been regularly visiting the salon since she was 14weeks old.

Like most puppies she finds the dryer scary and needs support to accept this part of the grooming process.

For the time being we manage this with a towel dry instead.

💡💡Groomer Top Tip 💡💡

- When drying your own hair at home, have your dog close by with a lickimat or kong. If the dog reacts, you need to move the dog and food dispenser away to a safer distance.
- As soon as the dog can cope, you can start to reduce the distance gradually until they are happy next to the dryer.
- Next you can slowly introduce the sensation of the airflow on their body. Remember to have the dryer on its lowest setting and to move it side to side. Start at the back of the dog with the tail, working onto the body once they are comfortable.
