🍫 Happy World Chocolate Day!🍫

While we might enjoy a chocolate treat, our pets should never share it.❤️🐾

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs and cats cannot process effectively. Even small amounts can cause serious illness, and darker chocolate is especially dangerous.

⚠️ Signs of chocolate poisoning include:
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Restlessness or hyperactivity
• Tremors or seizures
• Increased heart rate
• Collapse

If you think your pet has eaten chocolate, don’t wait for symptoms to appear—contact your vet immediately.

The best treat you can give your pet is keeping chocolate safely out of reach.

Have a wonderful World Chocolate Day, and help keep our four-legged friends safe! 💚

Even when it looks quiet out the front of the practice, it can be very busy out the back …

🐾 Emergency C-section for Aurora 🐾

Today was one of those days that reminds us why teamwork matters.

Aurora came into the practice needing an emergency C-section, and thanks to the quick actions of our dedicated veterinary surgeons, nurses and support team, she safely delivered 6 beautiful kittens. 🐱

An emergency C-section is performed when a mum is unable to deliver her kittens naturally, and acting quickly can be lifesaving for both mum and her babies. Signs that a cat may need urgent veterinary attention during labour include:
• Prolonged straining without producing a kitten
• More than 2 hours between kittens
• Green or bloody discharge before the first kitten is born
• Extreme lethargy, pain or distress

We’re delighted to say Aurora and her six little ones are doing well, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to every member of our team who worked together to make today a success. 💚

Please join us in wishing Aurora and her gorgeous kittens all the best as they recover!

What to do when you find a bird? 🐦

We have had an influx of calls regarding injured or young birds. Unfortunately we are not a rehabilitation centre so we can not take in any birds that can eventually be re released. Any injured birds that do not look life threatening should be taken to a bird rescue which you can find online. Birds that have broken wings or any visible life threatening injuries should be brought to the closest vets for treatment. 🧑‍🔬
Young birds have a habit of falling out of their nests, a lot of young birds will be placed on the floor by their mother to teach them to fly or are moving them away from danger. Please do not bring young birds to the practice unless they are injured. Not being able to fly is normal for young birds and this is most likely why they are out of the nest. The mother will usually be circling in the sky keeping an eye on them and will eventually take them back to the nest. If the young bird looks in a dangerous position you can lift them to a higher tree or bush but still visible to the mother, please refrain from doing anything else. ❌

Please call us if you have any other questions or concerns regarding this 😃

With the temperatures rising it is important that we keep our pets safe.

- Please do not walk your dog during the hottest parts of the day
- Ensure your pet always has access to fresh cold water
-Make sure your pet has cool places to rest
- Do not leave your pet in the car, even for a short period of time
- Only make journeys with your pets if absolutely necessary

Heat Stroke can be fatal and if you suspect your pet might have it, move your pet to a cool location, call your vets and head down immediately.

Signs of heat stroke can include
- Excessive panting
- Drooling
- Lethargy
- Vomiting or Diarrhoea
- Collapse
- Seizures

If your pet is suffering from any of these symptoms please do not hesitate getting in touch with your veterinary practice, as swift action can save lives.

Follow this advice to keep your pets safe this summer.

🐾 June is National Microchip Month! 🐾

Did you know that microchipped pets are significantly more likely to be reunited with their owners if they go missing?

A microchip is a quick, safe, and permanent form of identification that lasts a lifetime. It only takes seconds to implant and can make all the difference if your pet ever becomes lost.

💚 Microchips don’t wear out and last for life
💚 Vets, rescue centres and local authorities can scan them
💚 Keeping your contact details up to date is just as important as having the chip itself
💚 Gives your pet the best chance of getting home safely

If your pet isn’t microchipped, or you’re unsure whether your contact details are up to date, our team is here to help.

📞 Contact Vets for Pets Barry to book an appointment or discuss microchipping with one of our friendly colleagues.
