Christmas Shoe Box Appeal 2026 🎄💙

We are so pleased to be involved in this year’s shoe box appeal. The shoe box appeal is organised by a wonderful charity called Link to Hope. They aim to spread love, happiness and joy at Christmas time with these gifts for families and the elderly 💙

Last year Link to Hope sent over 25,000 shoeboxes to the Ukraine, Moldova, Romania and Bulgaria. The shoeboxes contain gifts from small toys and games to every day essentials, including toothpaste and shampoo, and aim to put smiles on faces at Christmas time 🎅

A big thank you to Sam for organising this again this year!

⭐️ Gonioscopy ⭐️

During a gonioscopic examination, our vets will apply some local anaesthetic drops, place a goniolens over the surface of the eye and use a slit lamp to look into the eye. They do this to examine the ‘iridocorneal drainage angle’. This is a very important test that quantifies pectinate ligament abnormality - a change that increases the risks of a dog developing primary closed angle glaucoma. A grade (1 to 3) is assigned following the exam to indicate the extent to which the eye is affected, which can inform breeding decisions.

Fenni visited us along with her golden retriever friends (who are all named after cheeses!) for gonioscopy testing. She was a superstar for the examination and was a big hit with VCA Chloe 💙

Cuteness overload 🐾💙

This week we welcomed a gorgeous litter of 11 Rottweiler puppies for eye testing! Alice, Chloe and Mike enjoyed lots of cuddles after the examinations and even managed to get the whole litter together for a photo 📸

Eye testing is important in Rottweiler puppies as it screens for congenital hereditary conditons, including multifocal retinal dysplasia (MRD).

Today marks the start of Animal Pain Awareness Month 2026 💙 Dogs and cats can be very good at hiding pain and discomfort, so it is important to know the signs to look out for.

Do you know the signs of a painful eye in your pet? 👁️

• Holding their eye closed
• Lethargic and unusually quiet
• Red appearance of their eye
• Rubbing at their eye
• Loss of appetite
• Squinting
• Sensitivity to bright lights
• Increased tearing or discharge

If you notice any of these signs, contact us or your vet as quickly as possible to have your pet examined ⏰
