🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎

So what effects can ragwort have on our horses?

The toxins in ragwort are absorbed into the blood stream and are broken down in the liver. This damages the liver and over time will cause liver failure. Sometimes the effects of eating ragwort are only seen a long time after the horse’s exposure to the plant, as the liver damage continues long after eating the plant.

Eating a small amount over a long period of time can cause the same damage as one large amount being consumed.

Signs of ragwort poisoning include:
-Lethargy
-Photosensitivity
-Significant weight loss
-Blindness
-Difficulty breathing
-Loss of balance

🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎

So what are we looking for when we talk about Ragwort??

Ragwort during the colder months can be seen as dark green rosettes of leaves growing low on the ground. At this early stage, it is easier to remove them. If you use a herbicide at this stage, then digging them up is easier and you are less likely to have a lot of the weeds growing the following year.

Once ragwort has flowered (seen as bright yellow flowers densely growing together) then you have the risk of seed dispersal where you may have a greater problem the following year.

🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎

If you notice ragwort around the area your horse resides....

Please wear sturdy gardening gloves when handling ragwort as the plants can also be harmful to humans. We also recommend that you cover your arms and legs and wear a facemask to avoid inhaling any of the pollen or seeds from the plants.

Disposal of ragwort should be either by controlled burning, rotting in a secure compost bin, or pay a suitable waste management company to dispose of it for you.

🐎 HORSE OWNERS - DO YOU KNOW THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT? 🐎

Did you know that ragwort plant are poisonous all year round? But because the plants are bitter tasting, most horses will avoid eating them. However, it is always a good idea to remove plants from areas where your horses will graze.

Also be careful that there are no plants within your hay or haylage as cut or wilted ragwort becomes more palatable to horses!

✨ Muffin ✨

This handsome chap is a lovely little Ragdoll kitten called Muffin! Muffin first came to visit us last month for his first vaccination with vet Eva. He was back in with RVN Jen yesterday for his 2nd vaccine and has gained 600g in weight, making him 1.6kg!
He was super brave for his injection and was more fussed on the treats 🤣

We look forward to seeing little Muffin grow up 🥰

🐱 CAT MICROCHIP OFFER! 🐱

Did you know that from the 10th June 2024, microchipping your cat will become a legal requirement in England?!

Whilst this is not currently happening here in Northern Ireland, we really think it's a great idea. We regularly see so many lost cats around the area that are not microchipped and are less likely to be reunited with their families.

That's why we are offering £10 OFF all cat microchips until September!! That means you can get your feline friend microchipped for just £10!

To find out more about microchipping, how it is done and how they work, visit this webpage - https://www.pet-advice.thepethealthclub.co.uk/

To avail of this offer, just call any of our branches in Ballyclare, Whiteabbey, Cavehill or Carrickfergus and make an appointment today.

🐾✨ VETERINARY NURSE AWARENESS MONTH ✨🐾

Next up for VNAM, meet Louise, one of our part time RVN's at CVG!

'I joined Clare Vets in 2012 as a kennel assistant, I completed my veterinary nurse Level 3 course at Greenmount College graduating as an RVN in 2018. Currently I am working as a part time RVN consulting in our Whiteabbey Branch and Ballyclare hospital along with administrative and hospital duties.

Nurse consults are one of my favourite roles, I enjoy spending time with our patients and their owners.

I have 2 rescue dogs Lucy and Mabel, along with 5 chickens. I enjoy cold water swimming, paddle boarding and walking my dogs on my days off.'
