🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎
Remember, once your horse has liver failure, caused by ragwort, it is almost always fatal. Early identification and removal is key. If you suspect that your horse has eaten ragwort, please contact us immediately for advice or treatment.
🐶 HAPPY FUR-THERS DAY!! 🐶
We would like to wish all you fabulous pet-dads a happy Fathers Day! Have the best day 😀✨
🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎
So what effects can ragwort have on our horses?
The toxins in ragwort are absorbed into the blood stream and are broken down in the liver. This damages the liver and over time will cause liver failure. Sometimes the effects of eating ragwort are only seen a long time after the horse’s exposure to the plant, as the liver damage continues long after eating the plant.
Eating a small amount over a long period of time can cause the same damage as one large amount being consumed.
Signs of ragwort poisoning include:
-Lethargy
-Photosensitivity
-Significant weight loss
-Blindness
-Difficulty breathing
-Loss of balance
🚨FOUND🚨
Black and white male cat recently neutered found on the Knockagh Road today in a critical condition. Has a tipped ear.
Please contact us if this may be your cat.
🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎
So what are we looking for when we talk about Ragwort??
Ragwort during the colder months can be seen as dark green rosettes of leaves growing low on the ground. At this early stage, it is easier to remove them. If you use a herbicide at this stage, then digging them up is easier and you are less likely to have a lot of the weeds growing the following year.
Once ragwort has flowered (seen as bright yellow flowers densely growing together) then you have the risk of seed dispersal where you may have a greater problem the following year.
🐎 THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT 🐎
If you notice ragwort around the area your horse resides....
Please wear sturdy gardening gloves when handling ragwort as the plants can also be harmful to humans. We also recommend that you cover your arms and legs and wear a facemask to avoid inhaling any of the pollen or seeds from the plants.
Disposal of ragwort should be either by controlled burning, rotting in a secure compost bin, or pay a suitable waste management company to dispose of it for you.
🐎 HORSE OWNERS - DO YOU KNOW THE DANGERS OF RAGWORT? 🐎
Did you know that ragwort plant are poisonous all year round? But because the plants are bitter tasting, most horses will avoid eating them. However, it is always a good idea to remove plants from areas where your horses will graze.
Also be careful that there are no plants within your hay or haylage as cut or wilted ragwort becomes more palatable to horses!

Our nurses are continuously in the lab running various samples to help detect issues in our patients! A common laboratory procedure we carry out is known as a haematocrit or Packed Cell Volume (PCV) count. This measures the percentage of your pets red blood cells and helps to detect anaemia, bleeding episodes and/or dehydration. Watch as we show how to run a manual PCV sample! #veterinary #veterinarymedicine #veterinarynurse #planetrvn #vnam #vnam2024
