🌡️ HOT WEATHER GROOMING ADVICE FROM B**A 🌡️
As temperatures soar above 30°C, B**A urges all professional dog groomers to take extra precautions to keep both pets and themselves safe and comfortable in the grooming salon. Working in hot conditions can increase the risk of heat stress, dehydration, and equipment overheating. Here are essential tips to help you stay cool and groom responsibly:
🔧 Equipment & Tools
Use cooler dryer settings: Avoid high heat when drying. Instead, opt for a low or cool setting and increase airflow where possible. Take breaks between drying sessions if needed.
-Oil clipper blades frequently: Clipper blades can heat up quickly. Apply clipper oil every 10–15 minutes to reduce friction and heat build-up.
-Disinfect & cool blades: Use blade sprays that clean, cool, and sanitise between grooms. Have a backup blade ready to swap if one gets too hot.
-Check tool temperature: Test blades and dryers on your forearm regularly to ensure they’re not too warm for the dog’s skin.
💧 Salon & Environment
Keep the grooming room well-ventilated: Open windows and use fans or air conditioning where possible. Avoid direct sunlight on grooming tables and stainless steel baths.
-Hydration is vital: Keep fresh water accessible at all times for both dogs and staff. Shorten grooming appointments where appropriate to reduce heat exposure.
-Use cooling mats or damp towels: Place them on grooming tables or in holding areas to provide dogs with a place to cool down.
-Mist sprays or cool flannels: A gentle water mist or damp cloth on the paws and belly can help regulate a dog’s temperature.
🐾 Dog Welfare
Recognise signs of heat stress: Excessive panting, drooling, disorientation, or vomiting require immediate attention. Stop grooming and cool the dog gently.
-Adapt the groom: Consider lighter trims or postpone full grooms if dogs appear distressed. Welfare must come before aesthetics.
-Prioritise vulnerable breeds: Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, double-coated dogs, elderly dogs, and those with medical conditions are especially sensitive to heat. Groom them early in the day or reschedule if necessary.
👩🔧 Groomer Wellbeing
Stay hydrated and take regular breaks. Use cooling wristbands or wear breathable grooming wear to stay more comfortable.
Don’t suffer in silence. If your workspace becomes too hot to operate safely, consider adjusting your schedule or hours temporarily.
B**A is committed to promoting best practices in the grooming industry. In extreme temperatures, your professional judgment and care make all the difference.
💬 Stay cool, stay safe — and always put welfare first.
