🌬️🐾 Today’s walk came with a LOT of reading!

It was windy today, which apparently meant the air was absolutely packed with interesting stories. 😂

Amber, Baxter and Shammy spent quite a bit of time with their noses in the air, air scenting and taking in all the information being carried on the breeze.

But what were they reading?

📖 Was it “Who’s Been Here?”
📖 “What Happened Over There?”
📖 “Who Has Walked This Way Today?”
📖 Or perhaps the bestseller “Something Very Interesting Is Happening Just Out Of Sight!” 🤣

And did Amber, Baxter and Shammy all read the same story?

Probably not!

They may have been standing in exactly the same spot, noses pointing in roughly the same direction, but I suspect each of them was getting their own personalised edition. 🐶👃

What information they were gathering, and what stories they were reading, is something only they know.

And perhaps that’s part of the magic of walking with dogs — we don’t always need to know what they are discovering.

Sometimes we just need to give them the time to stop, sniff, process and read the news. 🐾💙

After all, who are we to interrupt a very important newspaper delivery? 😂

🐾💨 Ever wondered why your dog suddenly stops, lifts their nose and seems completely absorbed by the breeze?

Today, Amber, Baxter and Shammy were busy decoding a whole world of information carried on the wind. 🌬️🐶

There was lots of air scenting going on as the three dogs stopped, lifted their noses and took in all the information being carried on the breeze.

For our dogs, a walk isn’t just about getting from A to B. Their noses are constantly gathering information about who or what has been around, what’s changed and what’s happening in their environment.

The wind can make that scent picture even more interesting — and sometimes a little overwhelming — so we gave them plenty of time to pause, sniff and process before continuing.

A gentle reminder that sniffing and stopping are part of the walk, not interruptions to it. 🐾💙

What does enrichment actually look like for a dog?

Amber came along to Alba Dogs to explore our enrichment environment — with plenty of choices along the way! 🐶

🧩 Puzzles
📦 A cardboard box filled with paper and hidden treats
👃 Snuffling textures
👅 Licking stations
🐾 Different surfaces to investigate

But the most important part?

Amber didn’t have to do everything.

She could choose.
Move on.
Come back.
Pause.
Or simply observe.

Enrichment isn’t about tiring your dog out or seeing how many activities they can complete.

It’s about giving them opportunities to use natural behaviours, explore, make choices and discover what they enjoy.

And after all that sniffing, searching, licking and problem-solving…

Amber chose to sleep. 😴💙

That’s enrichment too.

Sometimes our dogs need time to process their experience and switch off.

Less really is more.

🐾💙 A LITTLE SNEAK PEEK AT CANINE ENRICHMENT DAY

Ahead of Canine Enrichment Day this Saturday, Amber came along to Alba Dogs to have a little explore of the enrichment environment I’ve created.

And I thought these eight photos captured something really important about what enrichment is actually about.

We started with a simple puzzle, giving Amber an opportunity to use her nose, investigate and work things out for herself. 🧩

Then came a cardboard box filled with scrunched-up paper and hidden treats. Something so simple, but for a dog it offers smells, sounds, movement and the opportunity to search. 📦👃

Amber then moved on to another puzzle before exploring our different snuffling textures.

There’s something lovely about watching a dog really get their nose down and investigate. They aren’t just looking for food — they’re gathering information about the environment around them.

Next came our licking stations, with different textures for Amber to explore.

And throughout the session, there was no expectation that Amber had to complete every activity.

She could choose.

She could move on.

She could come back.

She could pause.

She could simply observe.

Because for me, enrichment isn’t about seeing how much we can get our dogs to do.

It’s about creating opportunities for them to use natural behaviours, explore their environment, make choices and discover what feels good for them.

And then came my favourite photograph of all…

The final picture shows Amber fast asleep in her bed. 😴💙

After all that sniffing, searching, licking, problem-solving and sensory exploration, she chose to rest.

And that’s an important part of enrichment too.

We don’t always need to keep adding activities.

Sometimes our dogs need the opportunity to process their experience and switch off.

Amber’s session wasn’t about tiring her out.

It was about giving her opportunities to explore at her own pace — and then respecting her choice to say, “That’s enough for me now.” ❤️

🐾 Charlie’s Progress — The Small Wins Really Do Matter 💚

Charlie’s journey has been anything but straightforward.

For a long time, the world outside his home has felt overwhelming. Even travelling in the car can be difficult for him, and the simple transition from the car into a new environment can feel like a huge challenge.

But over the last few weeks, we’ve started to see some lovely little changes.

✨ Charlie is now jumping into the car himself.

✨ He has started to engage with games such as Hand Touch and the Up/Down Pattern Game.

✨ His guardians are becoming more aware of how their own body language, movement and lead handling can influence Charlie.

✨ During his sessions, Charlie has shown us that he can slow down, think, make choices and connect with Michelle and Phil.

✨ We’ve seen changes in his posture and movement as he becomes more settled.

And perhaps most importantly, Michelle and Phil are learning to listen to what Charlie is communicating rather than simply asking him to do more.

Charlie still isn’t ready to confidently walk through his front door and out into the world.

And that’s okay. ❤️

We’re not going to measure his progress by how many metres he can walk.

We’re going to measure it by how safely he can think.

For Charlie, the journey isn’t about becoming a different dog. It’s about helping him build a bigger library of safe experiences and giving him the skills and confidence to navigate his world at a pace he can cope with.

Sometimes progress looks like walking further.

Sometimes it looks like jumping into the car by yourself.

Sometimes it looks like taking a breath, slowing down and choosing to connect with your person.

Those tiny moments matter.

Charlie is teaching us that progress isn’t always a straight line.

There will be good days and difficult days, but every experience gives us information and another opportunity to learn.

We keep taking the pressure off, making the steps smaller and celebrating what Charlie can do.

Because the small wins really do lead to the bigger victories. 🐾💚

Less pressure. More understanding.
Less expectation. More connection.
NATO — No Attachment To Outcome.

☀️ A gentle morning around Teca 🌿🐾

This morning Amber and I were joined by Baxter, Shammy and Arthur for a lovely walk around Teca.

The sun was shining and it was warm, making it one of those mornings where there was no need to rush. We could simply walk, pause, explore and enjoy being together. 💛

Along the way, we stopped for a little photo pose 📸🐶 — although getting everyone looking in the same direction is always an achievement! 😂

We also had a few little chats with other people and their dogs we met along the way. These moments of stopping are just as much a part of the walk as the walking itself.

For our dogs, a pause can be an opportunity to notice what is happening around them, gather information through their wonderful noses and ears, watch another dog pass by, or simply stand and take in the environment.

Sometimes the best walks aren’t about how far we’ve travelled or how quickly we’ve got there.

They’re about the little moments in between. 🌿

A sunny morning, four dogs, plenty of sniffing, a few hellos and lots of time to simply be. ❤️
