Today’s Mantrailing menu: split trails & a very special first!

Split trails = two people set off together, then split and head in different directions. The dog’s job? Stick with their target scent and work out which way their person went.

Sounds simple. It isn’t.

And Team Chaya took on their very first scent article start today! 🙌

What I loved most though? The dogs’ grit. Their persistence. Their willingness to stay in the game, work through the tricky moments and problem solve their way forward.

Amazing dogs. Amazing work. So much to be proud of today!

I don’t know who enjoyed today’s Mantrailing session more — the teams or me?! 😂

We had back trails on the menu today, but oh boy… what a venue we had!

Crowded spots, wind channels and a maze of buildings threw all kinds of challenges at the teams.

One thing I’m especially proud of is the grit and motivation of the dogs. This is exactly why building strong foundations is sooo important. We test and strengthen them again and again before we even think about moving on to the more “flashy” stuff.

Because what might not look challenging at first can turn into one of the most complex sessions.

And today was definitely one of those days.

Well done to all the teams! 🙌🐾

Mantrailing weekend, fully booked and fully worth it!

Saturday: 3 teams, we even had a handler join us all the way from Australia, borrowing a dog to trail! We tackled a nervous dog’s approach to the trail layer and worked on scent transfers onto objects as scent articles — but the real focus never left having FUN. So proud of every team out there!

Sunday: my turn to be a student. Joined a session with Frank ‘n’ Scents Mantrailing Frank ‘n’ Scents Mantrailing, where Camilla brought true dedication and sharp trail thinking that made it a joy to watch.

This is exactly how a weekend should go. 🤩

Back after a long break — and straight into our favorite thing: Mantrailing!

Fantastic group today, motivated dogs and handlers, some running their very first progression session.

The cool forest threw in just enough challenges to watch the dogs’ problem-solving skills shine — and have a ton of fun doing it.

Well done Team Mossy, Team Pippi, Team Nipsu & Team April !

New to mantrailing? Your dog doesn’t need to be a “sniffer breed” or have any experience — just a nose and motivation to work with you. DM us or drop a comment to join our next session!

Two Border Terriers, their very first mantrailing session, and they absolutely nailed it.

Watching dogs discover what their incredible noses are capable of never gets old. Every trail starts with a single step—and today was the beginning of a new adventure.

Welcome to our Mantrailing Family Team Mossy and Team Pippi!

The fastest way to discover how much you’re really reading your dog? Handle one you’ve never worked before.

One of the things I love about mantrailing is working with dogs I don’t know.

No expectations. No assumptions. Just observing, listening, and learning from the dog in front of me.

This amazing Border Terrier girl was my teammate during ( thanks to Rhi & Chris) the Marwell Mantrailing Retreat in the UK this May, and I loved every minute of it.

Every dog has something new to teach us. This little superstar certainly did.

Ever wondered why I keep telling you to stop and give your dog space on the trail?

If you’ve ever trailed with me, you’ve probably heard me say: “Stop there. Give them space. Don’t follow immediately.”

The way we position ourselves on a trail can have a huge impact on how our dogs work. Many dogs are sensitive to our body language, even when we don’t realise we’re communicating.

Imagine your dog arriving at a junction. If we’re right behind them, we can accidentally push them into a direction with our movement. And when we already know where the trail goes, it’s surprisingly easy to unconsciously tell our dog, “It’s this way!” with our body.

By giving our dogs a little more space, we allow them to work more independently, make their own decisions, and solve the scent puzzle without unnecessary pressure from us.

Of course, we’re all human. We all step in the wrong place, block a turn, or influence our dogs without meaning to. That’s part of learning.

So be aware of your positioning, but don’t beat yourself up over the occasional mistake. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s giving your dog the best opportunity to show you what they know.

There are trails where the environment takes over and all the planning goes out the window — and that’s okay too.

We’re not chasing perfection. We adapt, adjust, observe, and interpret what our dogs are telling us.

Today was one of those sessions.

What looked like a simple forest area turned into a surprisingly complex scent picture that challenged every team. There was so much going on in the environment that not everything could be easily explained, and that’s part of the beauty of mantrailing.

These are the days that ask for a little more patience, a little more trust, and a little more curiosity. They remind us to work with our dogs rather than against them, and to stay open to the fact that there is still so much we don’t know about how scent behaves. The funny thing is that while we are still trying to understand it, our dogs often know far more than we do. Sometimes the best thing we can do is trust their nose and follow along.

So enjoy the easy trails, but enjoy the difficult ones too. They often teach us the most.

And remember: we’re doing this for fun… nobody is actually missing for real. 😉
