Today I'd like to introduce the Beagle.

Originally bred as a scent hound, the Beagle was developed to track rabbits and other small game over long distances. Even today, their exceptional sense of smell remains one of the breed's defining characteristics.

They were bred to work independently while following a trail, which means they can sometimes appear less handler-focused than breeds developed to work in close cooperation with people.

One thing I particularly like about Beagles is that they are usually enthusiastic learners. Most are highly food-motivated, which can make training both effective and enjoyable. In my experience, Beagles genuinely like having something to do and often thrive when training, games, or other activities become part of their daily routine. Without enough mental stimulation, some can become surprisingly passive and disengaged.

That said, their hunting instincts should not be underestimated. Reliable recall can be challenging, and many Beagles require more management and training in distracting environments than their owners initially expect.

Now, to be completely honest, we don't have any purebred Beagles staying with us. (If you happen to know a Beagle owner, feel free to point them in our direction! 🤠)

Fun fact: Thanks to their exceptional sense of smell, Beagles are sometimes used at airports and border crossings to help detect prohibited food and agricultural products. One of the best-known examples is the USDA's "Beagle Brigade" program in the United States.

I've borrowed two wonderful Beagle mixes for today's post. Marvin is one of the sweetest dogs I know, ❤️ and the other model is Odin. Yes, Odin is actually a Beagle mix! (To be fair, he's only about 25% Beagle. The topic of mixed breeds, DNA tests, and why dogs don't always look the way we expect deserves a post of its own, so I'll save that for another day.)

Today I'd like to introduce the Lagotto Romagnolo, from Italy!

In recent years, the breed has become increasingly popular, probably thanks to its teddy bear appearance and low-shedding coat. What many people don't realize, however, is that beneath those curls is a clever and energetic working dog!

Lagottos are often highly motivated to use their noses and generally enjoy having a job to do. Like many intelligent breeds, they usually thrive when both their body and mind are kept busy.

One thing I find particularly interesting about the breed is how different they can be from one another. Some are outgoing and social, while others can be more reserved or sensitive. There is often much more individuality in the breed than people expect.

In our hotel, we've generally found Lagottos to be friendly, affectionate, and easy to live with. They tend to settle into the group well and usually enjoy human company. Many of them seem to have a lovely balance between being active when there's something to do and relaxed when there isn't.

Fun fact: The Lagotto Romagnolo is considered the only dog breed in the world bred specifically for truffle hunting.

In the photo, you can see Gina, one of our long-time guests. Whenever she arrives, it feels less like checking into a hotel and more like coming home. ❤️

Today I'd like to introduce the Boston Terrier.

With their expressive eyes, tuxedo-like markings, and cheerful personalities, Boston Terriers are often impossible not to like. Originally developed in the United States, they have been charming people for generations. Unlike many of the breeds I've written about so far, the Boston Terrier is a real companion dog! This means it doesn't have the particularly strong herding, hunting, guarding, or livestock instincts that many working breeds were originally bred for.

One thing I really like about Boston Terriers is that they have many of the qualities people love in bull-type dogs. They are often incredibly people-oriented, affectionate, and surprisingly tolerant. Most seem genuinely interested in making friends and being part of whatever is going on around them.

Although they are generally easy-going dogs, they are far from boring. One thing that often surprises people is how adaptable they can be. Many Boston Terriers are just as happy joining an adventure as they are relaxing at home with their family.

As much as I enjoy the breed, Boston Terriers also highlight the importance of responsible breeding. Their flat faces may be part of their charm, but they can also contribute to breathing difficulties and other health problems. Fortunately, awareness of these issues has increased in recent years, and many responsible breeders are working hard to prioritize health and functionality alongside appearance.

In our hotel, Boston Terriers have always been easy dogs to enjoy. They tend to fit into the group well, get along with other dogs, and bring a lot of positive energy wherever they go.

Fun fact: Because of their distinctive black-and-white markings, Boston Terriers are sometimes nicknamed "The American Gentleman."
