🐕 Q&A: Do I need to worry about tick prevention for my pet?

Ticks are more than just an outdoor nuisance — they can pose health risks to both pets and people. As temperatures warm up across the Okanagan, tick prevention becomes an important part of protecting your household.

Ticks attach to animals and people after time outdoors in grassy, wooded, or brush-covered areas. However, pets do not need to hike through the forest to encounter ticks. Even dogs that mostly stick to sidewalks or neighbourhood walks can pick them up.

Many people are surprised to learn they are often most likely to encounter ticks after a pet brings one into the home. A tick may attach during a walk, then later detach indoors and seek another host.

Ticks can cause skin irritation and may carry diseases affecting both animals and humans. In our region, we do have tick species capable of carrying Lyme disease. Some ticks may also transmit other illnesses or cause tick paralysis, a potentially serious condition caused by toxins released during feeding.

Many pets with ticks show few or no signs, but symptoms of tick-related illness may include lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, lameness or joint pain, and weakness or difficulty walking.

Fortunately, modern tick prevention products are safe and highly effective when used as directed. Most options are prescription medications available through your veterinarian and are typically given once monthly.

Even with prevention, regular tick checks remain important after time outdoors, especially around the ears, neck, collar area, between the toes, and under the legs.

Tick prevention protects more than your pet — it also helps reduce the chance of ticks entering your home and exposing your family. If you have questions about which prevention product is best for your pet, speak with your veterinarian.

🐾🐶 How can to prepare your pet for a visit to the veterinarian 🐕💉

Veterinary visits are an important part of keeping your pet healthy, but they can be stressful for some animals. A little preparation can help make the experience safer and more comfortable for both you and your pet.

If your pet becomes anxious, fearful, or difficult to handle during veterinary visits, talk to your veterinarian ahead of time. We can often prescribe safe and effective pre-visit medications to help reduce stress and make the appointment a more positive experience. These medications are designed to calm your pet, not “knock them out,” and can greatly improve their comfort and cooperation.

Before your appointment, gather any important medical information. If your pet has seen another veterinarian, bring copies of previous medical records or let us know where they were seen so we can request them. It is also helpful to bring a complete list of all medications and supplements your pet is currently taking, including over-the-counter products.

Your veterinarian will also want to know what your pet eats. Be prepared to share details about their diet, including the brand and type of food, as well as any treats, table foods, or chews they receive regularly.

At home, you can help prepare your pet through simple “vet visit training.” Gently handle and reward your pet while touching areas that may be examined during an appointment, such as their mouth, ears, paws, and tail. Keep sessions short and positive using praise or treats. This helps pets become more comfortable with handling and can reduce fear during examinations.

With preparation and support, veterinary visits can become less stressful and more successful for everyone involved.

This adorable kitty came in for a lion clip to help manage matting, excess shedding, and grooming difficulties. For some cats — especially long-haired, senior, or overweight cats — keeping up with their coat at home can become challenging.

Clipping the fur can help:

• Reduce hairballs
• Decrease shedding and dandruff in the home
• Improve comfort and mobility

Tiny patients, big personalities 🐥💛

These sweet little ducklings recently came through our clinic after being rescued and brought to safety. After a warm place to rest, supportive care, and lots of peeping, they were on their way to the next step in their journey.

Wildlife babies may look independent, but they often need specialized care to give them the best chance of survival. If you ever find injured or orphaned wildlife, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or local animal rescue organization for guidance before intervening.

Clinic cat Nibs recently had a dental procedure and is now on the mend 🦷🐾

What started as a very small fracture on an upper canine tooth ended up causing a painful tooth root abscess hidden below the gumline. Because of the damage and infection, the tooth needed to be extracted to keep Nibs comfortable and healthy.

Dental disease and fractured teeth can be surprisingly hard to spot at home — many pets continue eating normally even when they’re uncomfortable. Regular exams and dental care can help catch these problems early before they become more painful.

Wishing Nibs a smooth recovery and plenty of extra treats (the soft kind for now 😉).
