We are a multi-doctor facility, allowing us to tap into the multiple areas of expertise that each individual veterinarian brings to the practice and for the review of cases by more than one doctor when needed. We welcome any questions or comments which you may have about our facilities, services, veterinary medicine or this website. Our hospital provides medical, surgical, and dental care as well as behavioural consultations. We have a laboratory and radiology department for patient diagnostics, as well as the capability to do endoscopic examinations and ultrasound. Our practice has five Registered Veterinary Technicians on staff, more than any other local practice. We also have the only graduate of the Canadian Veterinary Dental Technician course as well as three additional support staff members with over forty years of clinic experience. One of our registered veterinary technicians is also a certified pet dog trainer who does both canine behavioural consultations and a variety of training classes are offered.

We were thrilled for Dr Smith, Sanzo and Panontin to attend as special guests for the Press conference and Site blessing for DVM NORTH at Lakehead University on June 24 2025. We would like to thank Dr Gillian Siddall (President, lakehead University) and Michel Beaulieu (Associate Vice-Provost (Academic)) for the invite and tireless work on this project. Thank you to Elder Gene for a wonderful ceremony and his words of wisdom about all animals - the four-legged, winged, swimmers, and crawlers and his ongoing insights as the program is developed. His circles have been welcoming and enlightening. Thank you to the honourable MPP Kevin Holland for his ongoing efforts to advocate for the north and for this Veterinary program, and the honorable MPP Trevor Jones, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness who was present to announce an additional $2 Million in funding for the project. We also need to thank the critical community partners who have generously donated 95% of the private fundraising to help make this dream become a reality. We have written countless letters to the government over the past decade detailing the challenges that veterinarians in Northern Ontario face when it comes to delivering animal care, the difficulty in recruiting veterinarians to move north and the needs of community members who either have no access to veterinary care or who drive 8-10 hours to access it. Todays ceremony is the realization that all the work by so many will finally bring forward a training facility that will serve those needs. The new facility has been named "Gakina Awesiinyag" meaning the place for All Animals. For years to come it will help produce world class veterinarians to renew the workforce that provides care to all animals. We are proud to congratulate Aiden Lehto, one of our staff and a Lakehead graduate, who will be in the inaugural class starting in Sep 2025. There are 3 other Thunder Bay students who have also been accepted into this class. They will graduate in 2029.

Happy Monday!!! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Now that we have reached Summer, we just want to take a moment to remind our amazing clients about fly bites on our furry friends. Tis the season for us all to become walking buffets. Our furry friends are not exception. Please remember to use pet safe product when trying to keep our fur babies free from bug bites and never apply/give medications unless guided by your veterinarian.

Before the day starts, we want to take a moment and say Thank you to all our great doctors!!!
Your dedication to helping and healing is by far the best in the world. Your thirst for knowledge and learning, always going above and beyond for your patients and their owners can’t even be measured. When you are not working, we all know you are still working. To the after-hours phone calls, research new and advancing veterinary medicine, getting that one last sick pet into your already packed schedule or just taking the time to make sure your support staff feels supported. We can’t say thank you enough for everything you do. We appreciate you!!!

To our amazing clients,
We wanted to let you know this Saturday February 8th we will be open form 8: 00am to 12 noon for medication and prescription pick up only. We will not have a doctor on site for medical care. You are more than welcome to call and schedule an appointment for the following week or if you need care, we encourage you to contact Smart Vet, and they can guide you to the on-call Veterinarian if needed.

Thunder Bay Veterinary Hospital is excited to welcome a new veterinarian Dr. Kes Dunnill to our team.
Her 2 greatest interests, science, and animals, lead her to a career in veterinary medicine. Kes attend Lakehead University, completing an Honors Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2021, then going on to Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, completing her doctorate in 2024.
Her interest in learning and moving veterinary medicine forward is what has drawn Kes to our team. Her caring nature, passion for animals will be a fantastic addition in helping us provide the best care possible for all our patients and their families.
