WALNUTLAWN PG BERKLEY

New release at Semex
✅3760 LPI
✅14 Conf
✅89 kg Fat

Berkley is the latest sire to be released at Semex from the Briar family. His dam is Parfect Breony NC x Briar VG88 x 10 gens VG/EX. Unfortunately Breony will remain unscored as we lost her approximately 40 days into her first lactation. She calved in and was doing reasonably well but it was evident she was not right, after many visits from the vet and some good days and bad days, we sent her to the University of Guelph Animal Hospital to see if we could turn her around as we had very high hopes for her! Unfortunately she had an abscess from one side of her abdomen to the other, the vet told us she had no chance to turn around so we were forced to put her down. A tough pill to swallow for sure! We have many sons and daughters from her and I am a firm believer in full pedigrees with no holes. So I understand for that reason, Berkley may not be for everybody but it is what it is. As a result of the hole in the pedigree Berkley is Breony's only son who will be released, but we decided to still work with her daughters. It is a little bit tough as honestly the hole on paper bothers me, but it doesn't diminish the fact that I know she was a good cow, I am quite certain she would not have had a problem getting to at least 85 points in her first lactation. On paper there is a hole, always will be, but she was the kind of cow I would like daughters from. Berkley's full sister Ambrose Bling *RC 3818 LPI 14 Conf has been IVFd extensively and has many extremely high pregnancies. She will be an impact cow for us and Semex for sure. She is now pregnant and should be alot fun to calve in as she is an absolute powerhouse!
Breony was a low stature but very wide cow, known as "Little Breony". Different than the other Briar daughters due to her smaller frame with less stature. Due to this and the look of Berkley's full sisters I would assume that he will sire daughters that are very powerful, probably thicker heavier b***d with tremendous legs.

I am often asked "what is Briar up to?" so figure it is time for an update.

Long story short, Briar is pregnant, dry, roughing it on pasture and as you can see in the picture, hanging out wherever it is the muddiest.

Our plan was to flush her extensively, sell a bunch of embryos and make alot of daughters. My thinking was, it would be nice to get her EX but given the choice, I would prefer more daughters over calving her again and getting her EX. Unfortunately Briar's flush results were quite ordinary so the only embryos sold were 3 Ambrose exported to Tomas Lindquist in Australia, fortunately he ended up 3 live heifer calves! We also were unable to get as many pregnancies as hoped. However in the next couple weeks our first calves will start arriving from her flushes last lactation, sired by Leyser PP, Johnboy, Oli and Lambda. Briar herself caught first sevice and is due late September to sexed Anahita.
Her oldest daughters are now fresh 2nd lactation...
LAMBDA BEYONCE is fresh at Butlerview and by the accounts I hear she looks tremendous! I am looking forward to seeing her out again this Fall!
RANGER BRAVA fresh a few months in her 2nd lactation has developed into a silky open ribbed, dairy machine with exceptional udder quality. She is a cow that I call "a cow of the future" as I believe the best modern cows can milk high volumes for much longer lactations than is current practice, and Brava will be given the opportunity to do this. I am keen to see what kind of kg milk she can produce over this lactation.
RANGER BRANDY is very close to drying off after her long first lactation where she will end up just short of 20,000 kg milk. "Robot ready" is a term thrown around alot these days and in our barn Brandy is as good it gets for a "robot cow" and it all comes down to one thing... "she loves the robot and the robot loves her."
SIDEKICK BRITTA is fresh just over a month in her 2nd lactation. In my opinion she is an impressive Jr 3 yr old and our best type cow currently in the barn. She is a special one to us as she combines Briar and Summer into 1 package!
LAMBDA BRIGHT is at Progenesis, I am not exactly sure at what stage she is at in her first lactation, but I know she is pregnant. Horacio Larrea or Carl Barclay can you update where she is at?

Briar and her daughters have been a real blessing to us! Briar's exceptional, one of a kind temperament has been passed on to her daughters and they make farming fun.

Sable's deep open rib and wide muzzle remind me alot of Sadie as a calf!
More than just a calf that will give you some fun in the showring, she should be a heifer that can breed on as well.
Thank you to John and Heather for their exceptional care and development of Sable.
