Salmonella Dublin (S. Dublin) has been increasingly discussed as an emerging problem facing the dairy, beef, and veal industries in Ontario. Although it has been difficult to quantify how big that problem was, as it had only been sporadically identified at premises across the province.

New research from the University of Guelph aimed to change this by improving our understanding of S. Dublin in Ontario. This research focused on S. Dublin presence at Ontario dairy farms, and additionally identified management practices or herd-level factors that increased the risk of S. Dublin presence in a dairy herd.

Calf health is not just a matter of animal welfare – it’s intrinsically linked to the future productivity and profitability of both dairy and veal farms. Early life health can influence its future growth rates, age at first calving or marketing, and even its milk yield. With the rising public concern over antimicrobial use in livestock, it becomes even more crucial to have complete calf health records. But how accurate are these records currently? A recent study from the University of Guelph investigated this question, revealing some interesting insights and solutions.

A snapshot of the current scenario

Surveying 88 dairy producers in Ontario, Canada, researchers found that less than 25 per cent of farmers consistently recorded all calf illnesses. Even more concerning, less than half documented all administered antimicrobial treatments. This lack of comprehensive recording presents a challenge, especially in an era where understanding and reducing antimicrobial use is of utmost importance.

As summer approaches, it often brings highly variable and unpredictable weather. With temperatures set to soar later this week, it is important to consider the effects of heat stress on all animals in your barn.

Calves are highly susceptible to the effects of heat stress when temperatures reach 26⁰C. Heat stress causes the calf to use energy to dissipate excess heat from its body, resulting in lower weight gain, compromised health, and even difficulty achieving growth targets for age at first calving or age to market. Heat stress can also lower blood serum immunoglobulin levels, leading to a greater risk of disease and death.

Heat stressed calves can be difficult to identify without sudden changes. Monitor calves twice daily (at minimum), and look for an increase in water consumption, reduced feed intake or growth, lethargy, standing when they’re normally lying, higher respiratory rates, panting and/or sweating, and increased disease.
