🧡 Freckles? On a cat? Absolutely! 🧡

Meet Kyah, who stopped by for a visit looking extra cozy in her little burrito wrap. 💕

If you look closely, you might notice the small black spots on her nose and paw pads. These are called lentigo—a harmless increase in pigment that is especially common in orange, cream, and calico cats. Lentigo can also appear on the lips, gums, and even the paw pads.

These spots are:
🐾 Flat (not raised)
🐾 Not painful or itchy
🐾 Benign and non-contagious
🐾 Often increase in number as cats get older

Lentigo is sometimes referred to as “cat freckles,” and while they may become more noticeable over time, they don’t require treatment.

That said, not every dark spot is lentigo. If you notice a spot that is raised, changing in size or shape, bleeding, ulcerated, or causing discomfort, it’s always worth having your veterinarian take a look. Regular checkups help us distinguish harmless pigment changes from conditions that may need further investigation.

Ever wonder what your hamster gets up to while you’re asleep? 🐹

While we’re tucked into bed, our tiny furry friends are just getting started! Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they’re most active during the evening and overnight hours. That’s when you’ll hear those little feet flying on the exercise wheel!

Our very own Peppermint Pattie has a hamster wheel pedometer, and the results from last night were impressive… 8,257 full wheel rotations in a single night! 🤯

That’s a great reminder of just how active hamsters are and why they need:
🐹 A properly sized exercise wheel and enclosure
🌿 Plenty of enrichment and places to explore
💛 Opportunities to express their natural behaviours

If your hamster seems to sleep all day, don’t worry—that’s exactly what they’re supposed to do! Their busiest hours happen when most of us are fast asleep.

Annual (or even twice-yearly) wellness exams are about so much more than vaccines—they give us the opportunity to find problems that often aren’t obvious at home. 🩺🐾

Meet Skye! ❤️ She came in looking like her usual happy, healthy self. She wasn’t squinting, rubbing at her eye, or showing any signs that anything was wrong.

But during her physical exam, we discovered a small meibomian gland adenoma tucked away on the inside of her eyelid. It’s so small that it’s difficult to see without gently lifting the eyelid, but each time she blinks, the mass rubs against the surface of her cornea, causing irritation and trauma.

Without a thorough examination, this could have easily gone unnoticed until it became much more uncomfortable or caused a corneal ulcer.

Dogs are incredibly good at hiding discomfort, which is why routine health checkups are so important. A careful nose-to-tail exam allows us to catch subtle problems early—often before they become bigger issues—and keep our pets feeling their best.

Sometimes the most important findings are the ones you can’t see. 💙🐶

Some of our favourite moments in veterinary medicine aren’t the big surgeries or dramatic recoveries—they’re the quiet victories. ❤️🐾

This is Zumma, a retired teaching beagle from the Atlantic Veterinary College. Earlier in her life, veterinary visits and medical procedures were incredibly stressful for her. In fact, her anxiety became so severe that she had to retire early, from the teaching program, because even gentle restraint was simply too overwhelming.

Fast forward to today. 💙

With years of patience, confidence-building at home by her owner, Dr. Dow, the use of Fear Free techniques, and the kindness and consistency of our amazing clinic team, Zumma has completely transformed her experience.

Today, she happily stands for her blood draw with no restraint. The only thing Bahram is doing is holding off the vein on her leg (just like a tourniquet would), while Zumma is completely focused on enjoying one of her favourite treats—Wow Butter! 🥜✨

This didn’t happen overnight. It took time, trust, and meeting Zumma where she was every step of the way. Her story is a wonderful reminder that every positive experience helps build confidence, and that veterinary care doesn’t have to be scary.

We’re so proud of you, Zumma! ❤️

Today we’re celebrating some of the adorable pups who have visited us here at Cross Roads Animal Health Centre! 💙

One of the best parts of our day is getting to meet so many wonderful dogs, and we can’t resist snapping a photo (or ten!) when they’re showing off their personalities. Whether they’re striking a perfect pose, flashing a goofy grin, or simply enjoying a well-earned treat after their visit, every picture captures what makes them special.

💧🐾 July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month! 🐾💧

As the weather warms up, keeping your pet well hydrated is one of the simplest ways to help them stay healthy and happy.

Here are a few easy ways to encourage your pet to drink more water:
- Refresh their water bowl daily.
- Place multiple water bowls around the house.
- Add a few ice cubes to their water for a fun summer treat.
- Feed canned food for increased water content
- Always bring fresh water on walks, hikes, and road trips.

Watch for signs of dehydration, including:
- Lethargy
- Dry or sticky gums
- Sunken eyes
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Loss of appetite

If your pet is vomiting, has diarrhea, or seems unable to keep up with their water needs, don’t wait—contact your veterinarian. Dehydration can become serious quickly, especially in young, senior, or ill pets. ⚠️

Ketamine is helping us celebrate World Snake Day, a day dedicated to appreciating these fascinating reptiles and the important role they play in our ecosystems.

Did you know?

👀 Snakes don’t have eyelids—they have a clear protective scale over each eye, so they always look like they’re awake!
👅 Snakes “smell” with their tongues, collecting scent particles and delivering them to a special organ in the roof of their mouth called the Jacobson’s organ.
🦴 Many snakes can eat prey much larger than their heads thanks to highly flexible jaws.
🌎 There are over 4,000 species of snakes around the world, and the vast majority are non-venomous.
🐀 Snakes are excellent natural pest control, helping keep rodent populations in check.

While snakes may not be everyone’s favourite animal, they’re incredible creatures that deserve our respect and appreciation. If you have a pet snake, regular veterinary checkups are an important part of keeping them healthy, just like our furry companions!

🐾🔥 National Pet Fire Safety Day 🔥🐾

Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day, a great reminder that our pets rely on us to keep them safe.

Here are a few simple ways to help protect your furry family members:

🏡 Keep candles out of reach, or switch to flameless LED candles.
🐾 Never leave pets unattended near lit candles, fireplaces, or stovetops.
🔌 Secure electrical cords to prevent chewing.
🐕 Consider using stove k**b covers or removing k**bs when you’re away—curious pets have been known to accidentally turn on burners!
🚪 Place a pet rescue window decal on your front door or window to let firefighters know how many pets are inside.
📱 Include your pets in your family’s emergency evacuation plan and keep leashes, carriers, and emergency supplies in an easy-to-access location.

Did you know? According to the National Fire Protection Association, pets accidentally start hundreds of home fires each year. Taking a few preventive steps can make a big difference.

We hope you never need to use your emergency plan—but having one in place could save your pet’s life. 🧡
