Our fourth year students are in their second month of their clinical year.

Over the next several months, you’ll meet them in examination rooms and waiting rooms. Behind the scenes, they’re learning from the best team in veterinary medicine while in operating rooms, CT scans and so much more.

While we’re caring for your animal, we’re also training the next generation of veterinarians!

Today is Pet Memorial Day, a time to reflect on the unconditional love and joy our animal companions bring into our lives, and to honour those we have lost.

Here are a few heartfelt ways to celebrate their memory:

🐾Create a photo album or memory box
🐾 Light a candle, or share a photo in their honour
🐾 Plant a tree or flowers in their favourite spot
🐾 Donate or volunteer at an animal charity in their name

Victoria Day is this weekend and we know some fireworks may be part of celebrating. Here’s how to help your dog stay calm and comfortable:

🐾Pets should be kept home and indoors, if possible during time periods when fireworks are expected.

🐾Set up a quiet spot with a crate or blanket fort, white noise,or a fan to help muffle the booms.

🐾 Play a movie or give them a treat-filled toy like a frozen Kong to keep their minds busy.

🐾 A good walk before the fireworks start can help burn off energy and ease anxiety.

🐾 Stay calm! Your presence is their biggest comfort, so just act like it’s just another day!

🐾For dogs who need extra support, your veterinarian can help with medication that will help them through the noisy night.

We love a happy ending!

Meet Nellie, a Newfoundland pony which is an endangered heritage animal.

She was diagnosed with guttural pouch mycosis, a life threatening illness that required specialized surgery. She was transported to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital last month where the team worked hard, with the help of two blood donors, to save her life.

Nellie is now on the mend and back to her old self on her farm in Newfoundland, thanks to our team!

Dr. Hopson is skilled in detection and treatment in feline dentistry, and can address everything from extractions to the removal of oral masses and managing chronic gum disease.

Using specialized dental x-rays, she can uncover hidden problems to ensure your cat is healthy and free from pain.

The AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital has an exotics specialist on site!

If you have a bird, rabbit, rodent, reptile or other exotic pet that needs specialized care, start with your family veterinarian who is familiar with your animal's history and medical needs.

If needed, they can contact the AVC's Zoo, Exotics and Wildlife Service to arrange a referral with Dr. Lara Cusack.

This way your pet has access to the best equipment and medical care when they’re in need of it!
