🐾Microchips🐾 - A small rice sized chip that is implanted under the skin between the shoulders that can be scanned to obtain animal and owners information. These can be done at any time and don’t require anesthetic to implant!

When we scan the animal with a small hand held scanner, a number code will come up. From there we lookup the microchip number which will let us know which company the microchip is registered with (we use 24Pet Watch). We then call the microchip company where the dispatcher will attempt to connect us to the animals owner!

Microchips are not trackers and do not contain a GPS to find the missing animal location. If you find a missing animal bring it to your local vet clinic for them to scan for a chip to hopefully reconnect the animal with their owners

We have been fielding many calls from concerned members of the public regarding bats, as is typical for this time of year, so we figured it was a good time to do another post about bats! 🦇

Alberta has nine species of bats. Specifically, within the Edmonton area, there are Big Brown Bats, Little Brown Bats, Silver-Haired Bats, and occasionally Hoary Bats. Although many bats migrate south, Big Brown Bats actually migrate into the city and urban areas. This makes bat sightings in August and September quite common, often in potentially unusual locations.

Wondering what to do if you come across a bat? If they are hanging vertically, even from a wall, they are likely just fine and should be left alone. These bats are probably just sunning and would appreciate being left undisturbed. However, if you find a bat on the ground, be sure to give us a call! Bats cannot take flight from a horizontal surface, so we can guide you through the proper steps to help in a way that is safe for both you and the bat.

Bats can act as vectors for rabies and have also been confirmed to carry White-Nose Syndrome in the Edmonton area. White-Nose Syndrome is a species-specific fungus that can be fatal to bats if contracted. Due to these health concerns, please call WILDNorth and access information via the link below. We do everything we can to help every creature that comes through our doors, and for each animal, this care looks very different. If we have a bat recuperating in our care, we keep it in isolation and offer it a secluded enclosure with mealworms for dinner.

Tigger decided her surgery suit was definitely optional… because she figured out if she wriggled out of it, she could also wiggle her way out of her kennel. And what was waiting on the other side? ALL the cuddles she could ever want 💕🐾

We think it’s safe to say this little lady had her own plan for recovery – and it involved endless snuggles and making us all laugh!💚🐾

Please use alternate routes to reach our clinic during construction on South Ave

👷🏽 Starting tomorrow, August 19, traffic disruptions including lane and road closures are expected along South Avenue to accommodate work by the Capital Region Parkland Water Services Commission. Work supports the ongoing replacement of the new water transmission pipeline that runs from Edmonton through Spruce Grove.

Construction is anticipated to be ongoing until the end of September.

Please remember to slow down, watch for workers and follow road detour signage.
