To Dr. Pfeifer, Dr. Jensen, Dr. Lewis, Dr. Gingras, Dr. Elliot, Dr. Pacholok, and Dr. Terletski—thank you for the countless lives you touch each day. Thank you for the long hours, the difficult decisions, the celebrations, the tears, and the unwavering commitment you show to every animal in your care.

That squishy swelling on your pet’s ear flap? It could be an ear hematoma! 👂🐾

An ear hematoma occurs when blood vessels inside the ear flap (pinna) rupture, causing blood to collect between the layers of tissue. This often results in a swollen, puffy ear that may feel like a water balloon.

In the photo shown, we removed 30 mL of blood and fluid from this dog’s ear hematoma to help relieve the pressure and discomfort to help aid in healing

Common causes include:
🐾 Ear infections
🐾 Allergies
🐾 Ear mites
🐾 Excessive scratching or head shaking
🐾 Trauma to the ear

If left untreated, ear hematomas can be painful and may result in permanent scarring and a thickened, wrinkled “cauliflower ear” appearance.

Treatment options vary depending on the size and severity of the hematoma and may include drainage, surgery, or other procedures. Just as importantly, we need to treat the reason your pet was shaking their head or scratching their ears in the first place.

If you notice a swollen ear flap on your pet, don’t ignore it early treatment can help keep them comfortable and prevent long-term changes to the ear. 💚🐶🐱

Cheese came in for a procedure, and let’s just say he made quite the impression. 🧀🐾

We know he hears it all the time, but with that sweet face and nonstop wagging tail, how could he not? From the moment he walked through the door, he had the whole team wrapped around his paw. ❤️

Who else thinks Cheese deserves extra treats just for being this cute?

🦷 Healthy-looking teeth don’t always mean a healthy mouth. What you can’t see can still cause serious problems!

Vlad came in for his COHAT (Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment) dental exam and cleaning. Above the gum line, his teeth looked great! But dental health is about much more than what we can see with our eyes.

Once we took his dental X-rays, we discovered dentigerous cysts. A dentigerous cyst is a fluid-filled pocket that forms around the crown of an unerupted (impacted) tooth. Over time, these cysts can silently destroy surrounding bone and damage nearby teeth, often without causing obvious signs at home.

Thanks to dental radiographs, we were able to identify and correct the problem before it caused more extensive damage.

Vlad’s case is a perfect example of why dental X-rays are such an important part of every COHAT. Without them, this hidden condition would have gone undetected.

Our RVT had one goal: steal some snuggles from Izzy during her visit. 🥰

Izzy had a different agenda… 🐾💨

Why sit still for cuddles when there are so many things to explore, people to visit, and adventures to be had? Safe to say our RVT got a few seconds of love before Izzy said no more I want to go move around and explore! ❤️😂
