Warm weather increases the risk of dehydration and heat stress in pets, especially dogs.

Since dogs cool themselves mainly through panting, they can experience increased water loss on hot days.

Keep fresh water available, avoid long walks during peak heat, and watch for signs like heavy panting, weakness, dry gums, or unusual tiredness.

🦠 Hidden Threats in Alberta: Echinococcus 🦠

A tiny parasite can cause a very serious disease in both pets and people.
Echinococcus multilocularis is becoming more common across Alberta, especially in coyotes, foxes, rodents, and even our dogs.

Dogs can become infected by hunting or scavenging rodents, and while many pets show no symptoms, they can still spread the parasite through their stool.

✅ Reduce the risk by:
• Keeping dogs on leash when possible
• Preventing hunting/scavenging behaviours
• Practicing good hand hygiene
• Staying current on deworming and parasite prevention

If you have questions about parasite prevention or your pet’s risk, our team at Parkland Veterinary Clinic is here to help.

The new Animal Care and Control Bylaw is in effect today!

The updated bylaw introduces new rules to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and the community.

Some of the changes include:
🐾 Stricter penalties for dog attacks and heightened restrictions for owners of vicious dogs.
🐾 An increased focus on animal welfare, including rules for the safe transport of pets in vehicles, and potential fines for leaving an animal unattended in vehicles in extreme weather or in a yard without access to shelter.
🐾 Clear regulations for backyard hens, bees and rabbits.
