Animals are more sensitive to sound than us. That, combined with not understanding what's happening, makes firework noises very stressful for them!

Startled pets can run away from home or get lost during this season. To protect against this, ensure your pet is microchipped, and keep your contact details up-to-date in a reputable pet database. This helps return your pet to you in case they get lost.

Here are some tips to keep your pets safely inside during firework season:

🏠 Set aside a space in your home where your pets feel safe, insulate it with blankets, and reward your pets when they're relaxing there.

❤️ Use pheromone products, especially around their safe space.

🐰 Before fireworks start, move small pets to a place indoors which you have insulated from sound with lots of bedding and blankets.

🪟📻 Close windows and curtains to insulate the sound, and provide background noise to muffle the sound. Don't forget to lock the windows and any pet flaps.

🙂 Always keep calm. If you're stressing out, your pet will too!

💩 Fear can sometimes make pets have accidents in the house. Don't punish them for being afraid.

💊 Oral sedatives/ anti-anxiolitics can be helpful in stressful situations and help pets feel more relaxed.

Wow—what a journey it’s been for Hank! 💪🐾

From coming into care with MMM (masticatory muscle myositis), to facing an unknown heart condition that had to be dealt with right away… to his airway and dental surgery in Vancouver… then a second dental, and some rehab for his spine and legs. He may have some mild f***l incontinence related to his spine, but it’s now much more manageable. 😮‍💨

On top of all that, getting his weight down while keeping him happy has been a serious balancing act—but he’s now a happy 14.7 kg, with a perfect waist, breathing better than most bulldogs you’ll ever hear, and enough stamina to do his signature flying leaps when running to his parents. 🐕💨

Hank will never be a “perfect” specimen, but honestly? He’s as perfect as he can be now. 💛

We could never have made it to 574 days without his incredible, dedicated foster parents, and the amazing support from our donors, volunteers, and community who stood by Hank and VBS every step of the way. 🙏

Hank just turned 8 years old in May, which makes him a senior—but you wouldn’t know it by the way he still wants to play with every dog he meets. 🐾

Today, Hank officially becomes a VBS Alumni! 🎉

He’s off to live out his golden years on a beautiful farm with his forever family—exactly where he belongs. 🏡🐑

We love you, Hank.
Congratulations, Hank & Family! ❤️

We should add a big thank you to the 4 vet hospitals that made this possible! Garry Oak Veterinary Hospital, Hillside Veterinary, West Coast Veterinary Dental Service & Pacific Animal Wellness Services!

Beans says:
Did you know most orange cats are male? 🐈🧡

🧬 Here’s the science behind it:
• The gene responsible for orange fur is found on the X chromosome.
• Female cats have two X chromosomes (XX), while males have one X and one Y (XY).
• To be an orange female, a cat needs to inherit the orange gene from both parents (i.e. both X chromosomes must carry it).
• To be an orange male, the cat only needs to inherit the orange gene on his one X chromosome (the Y doesn't carry coat color genes).

What this means 🌟:
It's easier for male cats to be orange—only one copy of the orange gene needed. Whereas for females, it's less likely as they need two copies. As a result, about 80% of orange cats are male!

Pretty cool how genetics affects the fur we fawn over, right? 🧡😺

Today, on National Pet Memorial Day, we remember the unconditional love, wagging tails, and purring cuddles that forever live in our hearts. Here's to the pets who made our lives better just by being in them. 🌈

We had sweet Junior come into the clinic for inappetence, vomiting, and lethargy. Upon taking x-rays, we can see that he has a large amount of stools in his bowel.

Cats will stop eating for various reasons, including constipation. Sufficient water consumption is the best way to prevent constipation as it help to lubricate the colon. After IV fluids and an e***a, Junior is back to feeling himself. 🐈
