Meet Howard...

Howard/Howie is a male, mixed breed who is estimated to be about 8 months old.
We are already in awe of this boy. He arrived with a folder full of xrays and a drs note that simply says "hind leg amputation"
Yet he's happy, he's loving and he's doing his best to behave like a gentleman. No growling, no flinching and no anxiety. These rescue dogs are such resilient creatures.

We are booked with Oriole Rd Animal Hospital on Friday, January 16th and will find out then if our vet needs to amputate his back leg or if we can save it. Either way he will recoup in a warm home on a comfy bed!

Today was a mixed bag of emotions.
Melissa Jane Hammer and I started before daylight... Getting 19 puppies ready for their vet visit. Loading crates and bathing.
Mom and 7 puppies arrived late last night and were in the building on the far side of the property, quarantined, so we planned to load them last.
It only took a split second to notice the entire group was in distress... We notified our vet that we suspected parvo and after it was confirmed we made the heart wrenching decision to euthanize. They were already too close to death to put them through anything more.

We are saddened they were sent off without anyone noticing how sick they were, and we aren't about to pretend that rescues run perfectly and things like this don't happen. They do. Volunteers are human and some are doing more than any one person should be saddled with. And everyone is doing their best.

So what started out as an exciting day took a dark turn. We had a good cry in the parking lot and carried on.

Looking forward is sometimes the only way to do this. You can't look back as you'll see the ones you couldn't save. And there are so so many... 💔

Monday we have vet visits and fosters to meet up with, but we're too excited, we need to introduce a few of our new friends!!

Rolo, Jack and Tove

Tove is a striking black rescue mix. She's happy to be romping around, it was a long trip!

Jack and Rolo are two good looking boys! Unique coloring and equally happy to run around the back yard.

This morning Riverhouse Rescue welcomed 10 new dogs into care.
We have been helping K9 Advocacy Manitoba by taking some of their quarantined rescues, freeing up their fosters for more dogs in need. Their winter temperatures are brutally cold and food is scarce.

We have a mom who was so starved that she had nothing to give her puppies. At 3 weeks old the litter was removed and she has been given time to recoup while they were fed by fosters. They have all done well and are now a rambunctious bunch of puppies!!

We took in one lone puppy who wasn't even 3 months old when he was found frozen and starving.

We have a pair who were picked up after being thrown out of a vehicle on the hwy. They were thin and scared...

And we have couple sisters who were found wandering in the freezing temps. They were found with mom and more siblings but the area was so remote its taken awhile to get all of them to safety.

They are tucked away where they can relax and take in their new surroundings. They will be seen by our vet on Monday and we will be introducing them soon!!

And he's a confident, curious pup.
He enjoys exploring and is brave while he checks out his surroundings.
He also loves a good snuggle with his fosters when he's ready to curl up for a nap.
We're pretty sure his ears have officially decided to stand up and they are impressive!!
