Therapeutic laser treatment for otitis (ear infection) ๐Ÿ˜Ž

This sweet pup was recently brought in by Saving Grace Animal Society for a severe ear infection. He had 2 types of bacteria as well as white blood cells on his ear swabs (see photo under the microscope). We knew his little ears needed all the help they could get, so before applying any ear medication we gave his ears a gentle clean and then a therapeutic laser treatment. This will help take down the inflammation so that the ear meds can work better!

P.S. how adorable is he in his 'doggles'!?

Payten is a mixed animal veterinary assistant at our Ponoka location.

Payten graduated from Lakeland College in 2021, and has been loving it ever since! Mixed animal practice is her jam! She has two cats her โ€œstubbyโ€ son Oli who only has 3 legs no ears and no tail, and little Lettie who luckily has all her limbs! Youโ€™ll find Payten dancing, cracking a joke, or snuggling something in the workplace often!

Dylan is our full time veterinary assistant at our Bashaw location.

He started with us back in 2021 when he graduated from Lakeland college in Vermilion. His love for animals started when he was young growing up on a farm outside of Bashaw. Now he has cows of his own as well as two senior dachshunds Max and Roxie as well as a german shepard named Heidi. When heโ€™s not at work in the clinic you can find him spending time with his dogs and cows or enjoying the outdoors whether itโ€™s just sitting outside, enjoying the sun or hiking in the mountains when he gets the chance.

Shelby is our small animal veterinary assistant!

Shelby has four pets of her own: Winslow the cavalier king Charles spaniel, Briar the standard poodle, Sparrow the trash bin cat and Beetlejuice the crested gecko.

Madie is our "most senior" veterinary assistant.

Madie started volunteering at CVC 9 years ago at age 13, after coming for a tour of their new building. She loved it so much she never left! Madie officially joined the team as a tech assistant in 2021. Sheโ€™s known for saying โ€œthat is the cutest animal Iโ€™ve ever seen!!โ€ multiple time per day. ๐Ÿ˜‚ At home, Madie has a rough collie named Flynn, a cat named David, and a new Jersey calf named Delilah.

Make sure you say hi next time you bring something cute into the clinic :)

We want to introduce you to the 4 incredible people who help out in all aspects of the clinic! They do everything from cleaning surgical instruments, to assisting with surgery prep, to walking patients, to answering the phone, to running horses, to taking your pets' memorial pawprints. We would not be able to function as smoothly as we do without these 4!

Stay tuned for the rest of the week for introductions to everyone ๐Ÿ˜ธ

The importance of regular grooming and nail trims ๐Ÿ’…

Check out these before and after photos of this dog's nails. When nails become overgrown they can cause pain when walking, be at risk for catching and tearing and if left long enough they can even affect the way the dog walks.

If you are unable to trim your pets nails at home, visit a groomer or vet clinic to have them done. Sometimes medications or full sedation are needed to make that happen!

We are in full swing with babies of all species at the clinic! This tiny kitten was in yesterday as his new "mom" needed to pick up milk replacer. Born to a feral mom who abandoned him, he was the only survivor of the litter. Luckily he found himself with a human mom who was willing to step up and take on tbe exhausting, but rewarding, duty of raising an orphaned kitten. ๐Ÿงก

A few things to remember if you find abandoned kittens:

๐Ÿ˜บ Do not immediately remove them from the location unless you are sure their mom is gone (or deceased) or they are in immediate danger. If they are warm, safe and not crying it is likely that mom is off hunting and will be back soon.

๐Ÿ˜บ Tiny kittens cannot regulate their own body temperature and need a heat source such as a heating pad if they don't have a mom to keep them warn.

๐Ÿ˜บ Kittens cannot drink cows milk. Just like all other species, they need a species-specific formula. This can he purchased at a vet clinic, pet store or online.

๐Ÿ˜บ Kittens younger than 3-4 weeks can not go to the bathroom themselves, this is something their mom helps them with. Without a mom, they need to be manually stimulated with a warm cloth to p*e & p**p.

๐Ÿ˜บ Kittens start getting their teeth around 4 weeks of age, this can be helpful to judge their age. And also once they get teeth they can be introduced to canned kitten food.

๐Ÿ˜บ If you are bottle feeding kittens it is important to make sure they are gaining weight. Weigh them at the same time each day using a kitchen scale (minimum recommendation for weight gain is 10 grams/day).

If you have found yourself raising orphaned kittens and need some advice, don't hesitate to reach out to us! If you have found abandoned kittens and are not able to care for them, please reach out to your local animal rescue or shelter.
