During summer, mineral is often fed free-choice, resulting in several questions regarding consumption. Here are a few common questions/answers regarding calves!

❓Is it okay/good for the calves to be eating mineral?
✅Yes, the typical summer beef minerals should be safe for calf consumption! Consuming mineral is beneficial for the calf, as Alberta grass may be low in certain trace minerals (variance throughout province, season, and with type of grass), and milk is a poor source of several important trace minerals for calves, such as copper, zinc, and selenium.

❓How much mineral should calves be consuming?
✅While most studies consider cow-calves as pairs, there has been work done measuring individual animal intake with electronic tags. Nursing calves 2-5 months can consume 60% of the mineral the cow consumes. An easy way to calculate overall intake is multiplying target cow mineral intakes by 1.6. For example, if a mineral targets 0.25lb consumption for a 1400lb cow, the pair should consume 0.25lb x 1.6 = 0.4lb/hd/d average consumption.
