Ottawa Dog Rescue

Ottawa Dog Rescue Ottawa Dog Rescue is a foster-based organization dedicated to helping abandoned, abused, and surrendered dogs find well-matched forever homes.

We help dogs in need through partnerships with shelters and rescue groups across Canada and internationally. Ottawa Dog Rescue was founded in August 2013 by a group of dedicated dog-lovers and experienced rescuers. We are an all-breed, foster-based rescue in the nation’s capital who have dedicated ourselves to helping abandoned, abused and surrendered dogs find well suited forever homes within the

Greater Ottawa area. Our mission is to be a transparent, accountable and professionally run non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing dogs at risk in the Ottawa area. We have a great team of committed volunteers, foster homes and local veterinarians to help us achieve our goals. All of our rescue dogs are provided with temporary foster home care until we find them well-matched and carefully screened forever homes. Along with rescue, we aim to educate by bringing awareness to responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay/neuter. Rescue is about saving lives, and we will do what it takes to do rescue right, because too many lives are lost due to a lack of public awareness and resources. We want to be part of the solution and will strive to make a difference one dog at a time. The rescue is organized as an Ontario and Federal non-profit charitable corporation #1899733. Our Charitable number is 83472 7232 RR0001.

✨ Today, on Remember Me Thursday, we pause to honour the pets who never had the chance to find a home and stand up for those still waiting.

On this year's we’re thinking of Dingo — a resilient pup who has overcome more than most dogs ever should. Could you be the one to give him the happy ending he deserves? 🏠❤️

💛Dingo’s story:
In December 2024, Dingo came into our care in urgent need of help. He had been surrendered and was on the verge of being euthanized. Suffering from painful bladder stones, what should have been a straightforward surgery turned into a life-or-death situation.

During the operation, a tear in his urethra caused urine to leak into his abdomen. To save his life, vets had to remove one kidney and place a catheter so his body could heal. It was touch and go, and there were days we weren’t sure if he would make it.
Dingo's future depended on whether his body could recover enough to urinate on his own.

Miraculously, Dingo pulled through. He still requires ongoing monitoring for stone recurrence, but his strength and determination inspire us every day.

Elton was diagnosed with kidney failure when he entered our care in March. While his initial prognosis was poor, with proper diet and management his condition has improved greatly, giving him the potential for a long, happy life. Because of this progress, Elton is no longer in our Palliative Program and is officially joining our Adoption Program! 🎉
On veterinary advice, Elton will not undergo dental surgery or neutering, as anesthesia could negatively affect his kidney values and trigger a recurrence of kidney failure. In addition, Elton is blind, but he has adapted well and continues to thrive.

While his initial prognosis was poor, with proper diet and management his condition has improved greatly, giving him the potential for a long, happy life. On veterinary advice, Elton will not undergo dental surgery or neutering, as anesthesia could negatively affect his kidney values and trigger a recurrence of kidney failure. In addition, Elton is blind, but he has adapted well and continues to thrive.

Name: Elton
Age: 10 years old
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier
Size: Small (0-25lbs)

Elton may have come into foster care with a rough prognosis, but no one ever gave him the memo!!!

After some expert vet care, special food, and a touch of Elton magic, his health has only improved, and he’s now stable, happy, and thriving with a daily dose of medication to help support his kidney function. The vet does not feel that surgery is in the cards for Elton, so he has not been neutered. His foster mom says he's such a polite gentleman, you'd never even know he’s still got em’! (Until he comes back from a haircut!)

Despite being fully blind, Elton gets around like a pro. His foster mom sometimes jokes he’s just pretending, as he navigates new spaces with confidence, goes on walks with joy, and makes it his mission to sniff and p*e on everything he can!!! Elton is a lover through and through. He’s gentle, clever, affectionate, and gets along well with dogs of all shapes and sizes. He adores toys, especially tossing them in the air for his own one dog game of fetch, and has a hilarious personality that will have you smiling every day.

Elton is looking for a family who’ll love him as he is and who will be lucky enough to share life with a dog who’s truly one of a kind.

Elton is up to date on core vaccinations.

❗AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION❗
Please note that only those being considered will be contacted.

Name: Maurice
Breed: English Mastiff
Age: 3 years old
Size: Giant (100+ lbs)

Meet Maurice, a 180-pound snuggle bear you never knew you needed!

His perfect day starts with a 15–20 minute walk before the day heats up, alongside his humans and dog pals. He walks well on leash for regular short strolls—just remember, you’re walking a giant breed dog 😉. After his chicken-free breakfast, Maurice is happy to curl up on the couch and would stay there until bedtime if you let him.

Maurice does not show separation anxiety when left alone, but when you are home, he prefers to stay close by. Like most mastiffs, he slobbers quite a bit—so his adopter should be prepared for a little extra laundry and may want washable furniture covers. A small trade-off for the love of the biggest, bestest boy!

While Maurice doesn’t need grand adventures, he does love a car ride and has even been known to plant himself in the driveway if he thinks you’re leaving without him. His stubborn streak is easily managed with treats and affection.

Maurice currently lives with both a Yorkie and a Shepherd, and he’s the calm, steady anchor of the trio. He does have a protective streak, especially when approached by new men or unfamiliar dogs; however, with slow, controlled introductions, he warms up quickly.

Maurice is microchipped, up to date on core vaccinations, and neutered.

🐾 Today is National Puppy Mill Awareness Day 🐾

At Ottawa Dog Rescue, we’ve seen firsthand the heartbreaking reality of puppy mills and backyard breeders. Many of the dogs who come into our care have been rescued from these situations — neglected, overbred, and kept in poor conditions. 💔

Every year, on the third Saturday of September, we raise our voices to shine a light on their stories and to fight for change.

✨ How you can help:
✔️ Adopt, don’t shop
✔️ Support rescues and shelters
✔️ Share this message to spread awareness

Together, we can give more dogs the chance at a safe and happy life. ❤️🐶

*Disclaimer these dogs have each moved on whether that be to new homes or to the next life and are now no longer available for adoption*

Please note that only those being considered will be contacted.

We didn't even have time to introduce him in care! Panchito settled so quickly into his foster home and has already been seen by our veterinarian. So here he is!

Name: Panchito
Breed: Chihuahua
Age: 1 year old
Size: Small (0-25 lbs)

Calling all Chihuahua lovers—we have a very special little guy looking for his forever home! Not only is he absolutely adorable, but he’s also smart, well-behaved, and full of love. He’s energetic, playful, and incredibly affectionate—he’ll attach quickly to “his person” and wants nothing more than to be by your side.

As a typical Chihuahua, Chito can be a bit nervous when meeting new faces, but once he feels safe and loved, his sweet personality shines through. He loves going for walks, playing with toys (especially stuffies!), and is a true cuddle bug who makes the best sleeping buddy. This little guy will happily stay in bed as long as you’d like. He’s house-trained, both p*e pad and outdoor, though it may take him a little longer to do his business outside with all the interesting smells to distract him.

Chito loves to be close to his people, either following you around or curling up in a cozy spot where he can see you. He’s playful, fast, and a surprisingly good jumper—zipping around the house with a toy is one of his favorite pastimes. He prefers not to be left alone for long stretches, but with patience and continued structure, he does settle.

Panchito would thrive in a quieter home where he can enjoy plenty of love, rest, playtime, and sunshine. He’s good with both cats and dogs, though he would also be perfectly content as the only pet in the home where he gets all the attention.

Chito is young, healthy, full of life, and ready to bring joy and companionship into someone’s life. He may be shy at first, but if you’re patient and adore Chihuahuas, it won’t take long for him to warm up and show you his best self. If you have lots of love to give and are ready for a loyal little buddy, please submit an application to meet Chito—he just might be your perfect match.

Panchito is microchipped, up to date on core vaccinations and neutered.
