The fall crops are revealing themselves!
It’s a good chance to talk about ‘gardening right’. What does that mean? There is so much advice and guidance available on how to garden properly it can be intimidating.
This year has been our best garden yet and we have had many compliments on it. But before I tell you all how to garden, I will fully admit, I don’t even know if I am gardening right!
One thing I have learned is that no matter how much you read about gardening, it comes down to feel. Getting to know your soil. Getting to know the lay of your land. Getting to know the overall environment and everything that Mother Nature surrounds you with.
It is a learning curve and you will fall flat on your face in failure too many times to count (I know I have!). Though… the failures are how you learn and are more valuable than the successes.
So before you self declare yourself as a Brown Thumb (like I once did), get your hands in the soil and get that relationship with Mother Nature. Not only will your tummy thank you, your mental health will as well. It is a proven fact that being surrounded with Mother Nature is beneficial.
Picture: Doing our version of no til for our fall crops to allow the worms to do their job to create more soil structure and breakdown the organics. The straw has overwintered in the garlic patch so many of the seeds are dead and it is a great mat to surpress the weeds. This experiment all resulted from having our hands in the soil and understand what it was telling us it needed. But remember, ‘feel’ is developed. It doesn’t happen overnight.
