Training isn’t just about the work you put in—it’s also about the recovery.

Rest after training gives your dog’s brain and body time to process what they’ve learned. Without downtime, training can become stressful and overwhelming.

At Rascals and Rescues, we know that balance is key. Structured training paired with calm rest helps your dog build confidence, retain new skills, and stay happy.

Struggling with on-leash walks? You can give your dog freedom and still keep control. Try a long leash in a wooded area—let them explore. If needed, gently step on the leash to guide them. Freedom and safety can go hand in hand!

Crate Training Creates Safety

A crate should feel like a safe place—not punishment.

For anxious or reactive dogs, it gives them somewhere to decompress and observe the world safely.

It helps them stay calm when guests arrive and builds confidence over time.
Every dog deserves a safe space.

Help your rescue dog gain confidence by beginning in calm public spaces, then gradually introducing busier environments.

Slow, positive exposure helps build trust and ease anxiety.

Building Trust at Home

Trust is built in small moments.

Take interest in your dog’s world—what they’re sniffing, watching, or focused on.
Have the person they fear deliver dinner by placing the bowl down and walking away.
This says: I’m safe. I’m not here to take.

Small actions build big trust.

Before every training session, having your tools ready—long leash, toys, treats—keeps you calm and consistent. Preparedness means smoother sessions, faster learning, and a more confident pup. Ready tools, ready mindset!

Tucker is a lovely 7 year old Boxer/ Pitbull cross.

He is friendly with new people, food motivated and walks very well on leash.

He was attacked by another dog and is showing some signs of nervousness when he sees a dog.

Giving Tucker a job- staying engaged with the person on the leash-when he feels nervous helps!

A clicker is more than a sound—it’s a clear way to tell your dog, “Yes! That’s exactly right.”
It helps by:
• Marking the exact moment your dog gets it right
•Staying consistent, no matter your mood
• Bridging the gap until the reward arrives
• Reducing confusion and frustration
The result? Faster learning, happier training, and a stronger bond
