A sincere thank you to Steve and Anne from Lake Edge Cottages for stopping by the shelter yesterday and presenting the proceeds from their recent fundraiser to support LAWS.

We are always grateful when local businesses choose to support our work and the animals in our care. Community partnerships like these help ensure we can continue providing shelter, medical care, and second chances to animals in need.

Thank you, Steve and Anne, for your kindness and generosity. We truly appreciate your support.

In case you missed it, Kaz made his television debut last week! ⭐️

Victoria (pictured here) and Alex from our animal care team provided moral support while Global Peterborough’s Keri Ferguson helped introduce viewers to LAWS and a couple of our adoptable animals.

We’re thrilled to be included in this segment and are grateful for this opportunity to share stories from the shelter with the community.

We think Kaz handled his celebrity status pretty well.

Our Doggie Dash Silent Auction opens for online bidding this Sunday!

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses and supporters, we’ve gathered an incredible collection of prizes to help animals in need. From unique experiences and gift certificates to sports tickets, golf passes, camping gear, and more, there’s something for everyone.

Online bidding will run all week long before the auction moves to Doggie Dash at Isabel Morris Park for final in-person bidding on June 14.

We’ve been hard at work getting everything ready behind the scenes (with Rush’s help), and we can’t wait to show you what’s in store.

Watch for the auction link on Sunday morning and get ready to bid, shop, and support local animals in care. 💙

Every animal who comes through our doors deserves more than the basics. They deserve patient care, individualized attention, medical treatment when they need it, enrichment, training, comfort, and the time to find the right home. As a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that receives no government funding, providing that level of care is only possible because of community support.

That’s why we’re so excited for Doggie Dash 2026!

Join us on Sunday, June 14 at Isabel Morris Park in Lakefield for a fun-filled afternoon in support of the animals at LAWS. Whether you walk with a dog, without a dog, as an individual, or as part of a team, every dollar raised helps animals in need right here in our community.

The day includes:
🐾 1.5 or 2.5 km community walk
🎤 Walk leaders Washboard Hank and Betty Baker
🎶 Live music by Caitlin O'Connor and The Detention Club
🍔 Food vendors
🛍️ Artisans and local businesses
🎯 Family-friendly games
🎁 Silent auction prizes (lots of great items!)
🐕 Plenty of dogs and dog lovers

Fundraising is already underway, and there’s still time to register, join a team, or support a participant.

We hope you’ll plan to spend the day with us as we celebrate animals, community, and the people who make this work possible.

Apple has been waiting a long time for this moment.

Last September, Apple and her three kittens arrived at LAWS after being found abandoned in a trailer park. Once they were medically assessed, the family moved into foster care, where Apple could begin learning about the safety and comfort of a loving home.

At first, she was frightened and uncertain. She spend her days tucked away in hiding spots and kept her distance from everyone around her. Eventually, her personality emerged and she began to trust.

She would greet her foster family when they came home, chatted in her soft little voice, watched the world from sunny windows, and enjoyed brushing sessions and treats before bedtime. She liked to be nearby, often sleeping at the foot of the bed through the night. Apple opened her heart while remaining her gentle self.

Back here at the shelter, she’s still shy and will need a patient adopter who understands that trust is something earned, not rushed. She prefers affection on her own terms and isn’t comfortable being picked up, but she has a lot of love to give to someone willing to let her move at her own pace.

Her kittens have all found their forever homes. Now it’s Apple’s turn. If you’d like to meet her, visit us Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm.

What a morning!

We were thrilled to see community members lining up before we opened for today’s Rabies Vaccine & Microchip Clinic. By the end of the event, 126 rabies vaccines and 18 microchips had been administered to local pets.

One of the highlights was meeting so many wonderful dogs and cats. They came through the doors with their families and bravely received the care they needed. We’re proud of every one of them.

We’re also incredibly proud of our team and volunteers for helping make this accessible option available to our community, and must extend a huge thanks to Dr. Kathleen Norman and Jody from Omemee Veterinary Hospital. It couldn’t have taken place without you.

Preventive care like rabies vaccination and microchipping helps keep pets healthy, safe, and with the people who love them. As a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that receives no government funding, we rely on donations to keep our doors open and make programs like this possible. This clinic is a wonderful example of how community support makes a tangible difference in supporting animal welfare throughout our region.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today. We loved meeting you and your furry family members!
