🌾 Tiny Plant, Big Problem! 🐾
This little culprit was removed from a patient's paw today. What looks like a harmless piece of grass is actually a spear grass (grass awn), and it can cause some serious discomfort for our furry friends.
Because of their sharp, barbed shape, spear grasses can work their way into the skin—most commonly between the toes—causing pain, swelling, redness, limping, and infection. Unlike a splinter, they often continue to migrate deeper into the tissue if left untreated.
As the weather warms up and grasses dry out, we're seeing more of these cases. After walks, hikes, or adventures through tall grass, take a moment to check your pet's paws, ears, and coat for any hitchhiking awns.
🚩 Signs to watch for:
• Excessive licking or chewing at the feet
• Limping
• Swelling between the toes
• Redness or drainage
• Head shaking or ear scratching
• Sudden discomfort after being outdoors
