As a pet groomer, I’m a big believer in knowing my lane—and staying in it. While I love helping dogs look and feel their best, some things are best left to veterinary professionals for the safety and long-term health of the animal.

Here are a few procedures I won’t perform and why:
1. A**l gland expressions
Repeated manual expression can cause the glands to become dependent on external help rather than emptying naturally. This is something I always recommend owners have assessed and managed by a veterinarian.

2. Ear plucking
Plucking hair from the ear canal can create tiny micro-abrasions that leave the ears vulnerable to bacteria and recurrent infections. I prefer to trim excess hair safely when appropriate and leave deeper ear care to the vet.

3. Dangerously difficult or high-risk situations
This includes dogs that are “alligator rolling” (extreme fear or resistance during restraint) or severely pelted (matted fur that has formed a solid, tight layer against the skin). These cases carry high risk of injury to the dog and stress that can escalate quickly.

4. Embedded nails
When nails have overgrown so severely that they curve and pierce the paw pads, this requires proper veterinary evaluation and treatment to address pain, infection, and underlying issues.

5. Open wounds
Any active bleeding, raw skin, abscesses, or open injuries need medical attention first. Grooming around compromised skin can worsen the problem and delay healing.
At the end of the day, my job is to make dogs feel better, not risk their health. When in doubt, I always refer to the vet. Our pets deserve the right professional for the right job. 🐾
What are your thoughts? Have you ever encountered a situation where something needed to be referred to a vet during grooming?

Dear clients and followers,

Just a quick note to let you know that the salon will be closed every Tuesday from June 30th to September 1st so that I can spend the day working at the family produce stand at Keady Market again this summer. Come on out, I would love to see you there! 🫛🌻

Otherwise, I do not intend to take any time off this summer, so salon hours will remain 9:30 to 5:00 weekdays, and Saturdays by appointment.

Thank you! ♥️

Got my puppy fix today with some chill little Pomeranian perfection 😍

Nothing like dozing off under the fluff dryer to set a pup up for long term comfort and grooming day success. Thank you for the visit and the cuddles, Kai! ❤️🐾

So true! Also my favourite part of grooming: building trust and helping dogs be brave and eventually comfortable on Spa Day!❤️

One thing people don’t always realize about grooming?

Sometimes the biggest accomplishment isn’t the haircut.
It’s building trust.

Not every dog walks into the salon confident and relaxed. Some are nervous about dryers. Some hate having their feet touched. Some had a bad experience somewhere else. Some are just puppies trying to figure out the world.

So a lot of grooming is actually about reading body language and helping dogs feel safe.

Sometimes that means slowing down.
Taking breaks.
Talking softly.
Changing our approach.
Or deciding that emotional comfort matters more than getting a “perfect” haircut that day.

Because the goal isn’t just getting through the appointment.
The goal is helping your dog learn that grooming doesn’t have to be scary.
And honestly, owners who consistently bring nervous dogs in — even when it’s hard — are doing something really important. Repeated calm experiences help dogs build confidence over time.

That patience and consistency truly matters more than you know. 🐶💕

The rewards for spending my days loving on pets and helping them look and feel good are so many, and so wonderful, I truly can't imagine ever doing anything else. Thank you for visiting, lovelies!
