While you're enjoying the Halloween fun, keep these important pet safety tips in mind:

🎃 Choose safe costumes: Make sure your pet's costume fits comfortably, doesn't restrict movement or breathing, and doesn't cover their eyes. Never leave a costumed pet unsupervised.

🍬 Keep candy out of reach: Chocolate, sugar-free candy containing xylitol, and other Halloween treats can be dangerous for pets. Keep candy bowls and treat bags somewhere your pets can't access.

🕯️ Watch those decorations: Keep lit candles, electrical cords, and small decorations away from curious paws and chewing mouths.

🚪 Be mindful of the door: Frequent trick-or-treaters can be stressful, and open doors create opportunities for pets to slip outside. Keep nervous pets in a quiet, secure room.

🐾 Know your pet's limits: Not every pet enjoys dressing up or greeting strangers. If your pet seems stressed, let them skip the costume and enjoy a quiet night instead!

🐾 MEET THE RVT: ALLISA! 🐾

Our Meet the RVT series continues, and this time we’re heading over to our partner clinic, Souris Valley Veterinary Services (SVVS), to introduce you to Allisa! 💚

Allisa has been an RVT for one year, but her journey into veterinary medicine took a little detour first! After working as a pharmacy technician, she discovered her passion for helping animals through rescue work. That experience inspired her to learn everything she could to help improve their lives. 🐶🐱

💚 What She Loves About Being an RVT

One of Allisa’s favourite parts of the job is being able to support both patients and their families through every stage of life, from the happiest moments to the hardest ones. ❤️

And when it comes to unforgettable career moments, she has a couple! From performing her first fetotomy with Dr. Marcel 😳🙈 to successfully resuscitating kittens during a C-section with Dr. Dawn, there have already been some pretty incredible experiences in her first year!

Her advice to her younger RVT self? “Your confidence, knowledge and skills will come with time, patience and practice!” A great reminder that learning and growing are all part of the journey. 🩺

🐾 MEET THE RVT: MELISSA! 🐾

This month, we’re celebrating the amazing Registered Veterinary Technologists who make a difference every day at PAHC! 💚 Today, we’re introducing Melissa, who is celebrating an incredible 20 years as an RVT! 🎉

🐾 HER JOURNEY

Melissa’s love for animals started early, growing up with cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, and anything else she could convince her parents to bring home!

She began volunteering at Hoium Veterinary Services, which transitioned to PAHC after she graduated. Throughout her career, she has worked at both our Weyburn and Estevan locations and is now the Practice Manager at our Estevan clinic!

💚 WHAT SHE LOVES ABOUT BEING AN RVT

Melissa loves what she does! The constant changes and opportunities to learn new things keep her coming back year after year.

Her advice to her younger RVT self? “You are appreciated and doing great. Keep doing what you're doing.” ❤️

☕ Go-to drink: Iced coffee! It doubles as her comfort food after a long shift, too! 😂

🐄 Favourite animals: Cows for large animals, dogs over cats, and a tie between rabbits and hedgehogs for exotics!

🐶 Her animal crew: Two Labs, Sadie and Lainey, a very special one-eyed, three-legged house cat named Millie, a few rabbits, and outdoor cats!

🔬 If she weren't an RVT: She could see herself working as a research lab technician or in surgical nursing.

🐾 Meet the RVT: Megan! 💚

Next up in our Meet the RVT series is Megan, an RVT with 13 years of experience who works at our partner clinic, Souris Valley Veterinary Services in Carnduff, part of the PAHC family!

Megan graduated from Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta, and her love for veterinary medicine started early. Growing up on a mixed farm, she loved going to the vet clinic with her family's animals and helping however she could. Those childhood experiences helped inspire the career she has today! 🌾

💚 A Little About Megan

Megan loves the variety her job brings, from working with animals to semen testing and export work. One of the most meaningful parts of veterinary medicine is getting to know patients and their people, although saying goodbye to patients can be one of the hardest parts of the job.

She also has a special connection to the veterinarians who inspired her as a child, Dr. Marcel Macfarlane and Dr. Dawn Pauwelyn. Getting to work alongside the people who inspired her when she was just four years old is something she truly appreciates! 🐮

🥤 The RVT Behind the Scrubs

🥤 Her drink of choice? Loaded teas!

🐄 Cattle are Megan's favourite animals, and she raises cattle herself. She also shares her home with a dog, a snake, and two cats!

🍦 Her go-to comfort food after a long day is ice cream.

🌾 If she weren't an RVT, Megan would be ranching!

Outside of work, she enjoys showing cattle, cooking, reading, and playing card games with friends.

🐾 Helping Your Pet Reach a Healthy Weight! 🐶🐱

Weight loss for our furry friends can be tricky! Between those irresistible puppy-dog eyes and the occasional extra treat, it can be easy to give a little more than we realize. ❤️

🐾 Did you know that treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily calories? The other 90% should come from a complete and balanced diet.

Here are a few tips to help your pet stay healthy:
🐕 Measure meals instead of guessing portions.
🦴 Keep treats to a minimum and consider using a portion of their regular kibble as rewards.
🎾 Make time for daily exercise and play.
⚖️ Monitor your pet’s weight and body condition regularly.
