This is one of my favourite exercises under saddle. It works on so many different things at the same time. Follow your nose, circles, stops, rollbacks, all while making the horse responsible for there own feet, sorting out there leads on there own.. helps with rushing without having to hold the horse back.. an hour of this and you will have a different horse afterwards..

In the horse industry I’m often know as someone who deals with nasty horses, or a problem solver, while I see myself simply as a c**t starter. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to get my hands on many horses and all the while bettering my abilities as a horse trainer, dealing with some of these “nasty horses”came at a huge cost, my ability to ride a horse. With 20 plus years of training under my belt my ability to ride a horse was dramatically declining. My hands were fast, loud, up in the air and made a drummer look like they were meditating. I practiced disengaging so regularly that the thought of engaging the horses hind quarters was simply not there. I rocked in the saddle like I was trying to do all the work myself. My understanding of leads was minimal, all in all, if I got on a finished horse I would have been in a lot of trouble. Embarrassing to say the least. Over the last few months I’ve had, in my opinion some of the most important lessons of my life. These lessons will help guide me in becoming a better trainer, horseman and most of all, rider. I cannot express my gratitude enough to the people who have given their time knowledge and guidance over the last few months and continue daily, while giving me the opportunity to do some training that I often never have the chance to experience. The tools we gain will stay with us and help us continue to improve ourselves for the horses we train. This horse and the experience will be something I talk about often..

About

Wild Winds is dedicated to helping people better understand their horses throughout the journey of Horsemanship. We understand that most horse owners want to develop a strong bond and connection to their horse; and this can only be achieved through understanding of horse behavior as well as having a natural approach to working with, and handling, horses. Here at Wild Winds Horsemanship and Equine Rescue we practice Natural Horsemanship.

Natural Horsemanship is a philosophy of working with horses based on the horse’s natural instincts and methods of communication, with the understanding that horses do not learn through fear or pain, but rather from pressure and the release of pressure.

It is a common misconception that Natural Horsemanship equals “wimpy” horsemanship, where the ‘relationship’ is prized above all else. This is not the case. Natural horsemanship trainers must use firm but fair force when necessary to ensure the safety of the rider or handler, as well as the horse. We simply do not use fear or pain to motivate the animal, nor do we attempt to force the animal into submission.
