Happy Halloween from all of us at Aspen! 🎃

Costumes, doorbells, and lots of visitors can make Halloween an unusual night for our dogs. Give them a quiet place to take a break when needed, reward calm choices, and make sure all that Halloween chocolate stays safely out of reach!

You can train for a lot of things. A moose stepping onto the trail isn’t usually one you can plan for though. Hope took this surprise visitor in stride, staying relaxed as she and our trainer moved to a safe distance. Moments like this show what we strive for in an Aspen Service Dog, one who can stay settled no matter what turns up.

Three Aspen facility dog graduates, one incredible team!

Recent graduate Lumina has joined Kasper and Dino in supporting a youth program through both the good days and the really hard ones.

Whether they’re bringing a little joy to someone’s day, offering a quiet moment of comfort, or simply being there when they’re needed, each brings their own personality and strengths to the job.

We’re incredibly proud to see Lumina, Kasper, and Dino working together with their talented handlers and making a difference in the lives of the young people they support.

Turning on the lights can be an important support task that helps create greater independence.

Teaching the task is only one part of the process. We also think carefully about how a dog performs it. For this light switch, a small platform puts it comfortably within reach, reducing jumping and awkward stretching while also protecting the wall from repeated contact.

Thoughtful task training means finding solutions that work for the person while keeping the dog safe, comfortable, and confident doing the job.

Thank you to everyone in Calgary who stopped by yesterday to visit the Alberta Children’s Epilepsy Program All Aboard The Brain Train event.

We had such a wonderful time meeting so many incredible people, answering questions, and sharing a little more about the world of service dogs.

Hope was especially happy to make so many new friends and loved helping us share what makes a facility dog different from a service dog and the unique ways each can support people in their communities.

Thank you to everyone who came by to say hello, and to the organizers for having us!

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Aspen!

This Thanksgiving, we’re especially grateful for the people who make this work possible. Our clients and families, volunteers, trainers, supporters, and the incredible dogs at the heart of it all.

Kylie found the pumpkins. Now she’s waiting patiently for someone to mention turkey. 😂

Can you tell who’s who? Cashew and his sister Hazel, then and now. These two have moved from puppy foundations into advanced training and are such a joy to work with. Thank you to their incredible puppy raisers who helped them build such a strong foundation.

Hope and Stetson explored the exciting world of sports today watching basketball, figure skating, and hockey.

Hope was very proper about the whole experience, quietly taking it all in. Stetson was equally settled, but we may have discovered he’s a hockey fan. He quickly figured out there was a puck involved and seemed pretty interested in keeping track of where it might go next from his spot relaxing in the bleachers.

They may train together, but apparently that doesn’t mean they have to cheer for the same sports!

Kylie and Stetson traded the training room for campus life this week.

There’s something different around every corner with students heading to class, busy crossings, food, doors opening, people stopping to chat, and plenty of new places to explore.

They don’t have to know exactly what every future day will look like. The goal is to give them enough experiences that, when something new comes along, they’ve learned how to figure it out alongside their person.
